Possible hemochromatosis?

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've had elevated liver enzymes for about 6 months and my doc ordered a liver biopsy during a gallbladder surgery. The results showed significant iron deposits in my liver. My recent labs were

Iron & TIBC 327

iron serum 120

Iron sat 37%

Ferritin 272 ng/ml

Is this possibly hereditary hemochromatosis or the start of it? I am 24 year old male. Have not seen the doc for a followup apt yet

    Hi, Wes-

It sounds like you could be on that path, but luckily your ferritin isn't crazy high.  My liver enzymes were elevetated before I knew I had HH.  They would rise, then just normalize without intervention.  I had very low platelets, so with the two combined, the doctor knew something was up, but for some reason, over the years I had been to several doctors and they noted that, they never thought to test me...though I had no idea it was in our family.

But I think HH is probably the source of your issues and you are fortunate to have caught it early if that's the case.  It was about 10 years from my first elevated liver enzymes to diagnosis.  My liver enzymes are now normal.
