Possible IBS case, opinions please

I am a male, age 58. I've had some worries with my stomach all my life. I had heartburn over a decade but currently it is not a problem. My stomach gets easily upset if I eat apples, beans or some other stuff. This is something that I've suffered from childhood. Last year I started to feel slight pain very low right side. I also felt very bloated almost all the time. Doctor took some lab tests and my stomach was ultra scanned. Everything was ok. No problems in the toilet. No diarrhea. Colonoscopy was not done. My prostata was also checked and was ok. The doctor adviced to start FODMAP and after about 2 weeks all the pain went away. That was in December last year. Everything was ok for over 2 months. Then the pain come back and now it is worse. It is not constant but if I bend forward I feel the pain and a feeling of fullness on the right side. The worst place is very down. There is also pain on my back. There are days that I'm almost ok but in the evenings the pain gets worse. I've tried to follow the FODMAP but is is very hard as I eat lunch in restaurants during working days and there is usually something suspicious on the plate.

Have you tried Milk of Magnesia?

I have not heard of that product. It seems to be an interesting alternative.

I have tried peppermint capsules but with poor results.

I get it at the drug store here in Canada.  I take 3 tablespoons and get a BM within 2-3 hours.  Cramping and diarrhea have stopped.

    You mention trying peppermint capsules.

    Do you mean COLPERMIN?

You can buy them over the counter from a chemist.

If they work you can then get them on prescription.

You could also try something called BUSCOPAN.

You can buy them from Morrisons.

Again if they work you can get them on prescription.

    Hope this helps.

Take care and keep in touch

The peppermint capsules that I have tried seem to be the same stuff as Colpermin. I live in Europe so we have different brand names here.

Buscopan seems to be interesting medicine. Thank you for the info.

I have an appointment with a doctor this week. My exeperiences are that doctors are quite puzzled with digestive problems.

Do you experience constipation or loose, urgent stools?  You may have IBS which can go away and come back   Buscopan helps me, but I would avoid peppermint remedies since you have had heartburn in the past.  Peppermint can trigger heartburn.

Doctor took some lab tests, ultrascan and said that it is most probably IBS.

In that case, accept your doctor’s diagnosis.

Hi, with the FODMAP diet you really need to know what you are eating, many high fodmap things are slip in foods, things like certain sweetners, onion products etc, I find inulin a real problem it's high in onions, its a right nightmare dodging bad things, I'm always reading labels.
