Possible Medication Change To Sertraline. Any Experiences With It?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi, I'm 15 and have been on many different medications for different things as i was in hospital for my mental health: fluoxetine, lorazepam, phenergan, zopiclone, quetiapine and I am currently on 45mg of Mirtazapine however as my health is deteriatng and my medication cant be increased Its being changed to sertraline which I'm a bit apprehensive about because I've had to deal with some nasty side effects on the other medication I was on. I'm particularly worried about the weight gain as I'm still battling with eating problems that I recovered from, but then relapsed because of the Mirtazapine side effects.

I'm kind of scared so any experiences or advice would be really apprechiated. Thanks smile

    Hi there ,

Boy guy sounds like you are having a real hard time, well hope this is the one for you , people I have spoke to either it does not work unless their dose was updated, I start on  50mg  then after a few weeks I had to be put up to 100mg which i have been on for just over one year.

My own opion is that it took quite awhile to kick in but one it did i felt alot better but still down and the tablet just took the edge off it. BUT i missed  a week as i could not get to the GP to get my repeat so I had to come off them for a week and oh boy what side effects I has so dont just stop them. By the sounds of it your are getting good care so stick in there and let  the professionls asnwer to any questions or worrys you have . you are not alone and there is millions of us just in the same boat, stick with this forum as its great to get it off your chest and none of us will judge you as we are also in that dark hole with you just now. x

Hi, im fairly new to sertraline (in my 6th week) but with regards to weight, my only experience so far has been a gradual loss - about 1 or 2 lbs per week. Admittedly I always do lose weight when going thru an anxious period and this may have been exasipated by worry over starting ad's but sertraline has undoubtedly suppressed my appetite. I imagine this will slowly return as it all settles down.

    Best wishes x

    Josie,

Best wishes, so sorry you've had to go thru so many meds but don't worry about this one.   I've had sertraline, no weight gain, no bad side effects. I tapered off and stopped for awhile, not as hard to do that as paxil but some of the usual sx of stopping ssri; then I restarted because panic reoccured.

SSRIs were made to get severely depressed out of that hole so they could do things to get better.  But if they're energizing, wouldn't they make us more anxious?  Sertraline did increase my physical anxiety, more foot shaking, but that reduced after awhile, it stopped panic and reduced mental anxiety.  I don't think of SSRI's causing weight gain (shouldn't if they energize,) but think I've heard of paxil doing that, nothing like risperdal.

I saw another recent post, guy just wanted to say how much sert helped and let us know to be patient, it took quite awhile to work.   Took a few weeks for me but really stopped  panic attacks.

    Take care,

    Patrick
