Possible mild COPD please help

Hi I'm a 22 yr old male who has had been having a horrible time with my breathing for 8 months now. I have had chest xray an chest ct both clear also have had a pulmonary function test results as shown

Fev1 90%

Fvc 104%

Fev1%E 85%

Pef 113%

With the report saying I showed a mild obstructive breathing pattern.

My specialist has said they are all normal results and put it down to my anxiety causing these breathing problems.

To my understanding my Fev1E is on the lower end of normal.

Could someone please help me understand this as I believe the specialist may be wrong . I am terrified. Thankyou

Hi it would be very unusual to have copd at your young age as most are diagnosed in their 50's and 60's and the vast majority are caused by many years of smoking.

Between 90-100% is not considered copd but just a variation of the norm.  Have you been tested for asthma?  This is much more likely than copd.  x

Yeh thathat's sounds rite. My doc said I had copd I'm 29. Then I went to pulminologist. He's like ph ur to young to have copd. He said I was at 73 percent which wasn't perfect but surly not copd. He said I had terrible untreated asthma. So you really never know.

So you don't have copd? How did they diagnose you with asthma? Did you do that test where they try and induce the asthma?

They don't do tests to 'induce' asthma.  You blow into a peak and flow meter several times and that determines whether or not you have asthma. x

Your fev1 can often vary by several points so 85% is neither here nor there.   Next time you are tested it could well be 90% or over.  If you have several close family members who have/had copd then it is possible it is genetic but this is pretty rare.

This is not to say there is nothing wrong but I presume the tests would have shown anything.  It is almost unheard of for someone your age to be diagnosed with copd.   There is a very stong link between anxiety and breathing problems though so I would guess it is this.   Google the jobs which can cause breathing difficulties,  and also look up breathing exerciess specifically designed for anxiety sufferers.   This should help a lot.  x

No close family has had copd. My breathing difficulty is just so constant and just seems to be to to bad to be anxiety. But I hope I am wrong and this will pass. Thankyou for your help

You are welcome.  One of my sister has had extreme anxiety all her life including health anxiety.   40 years later she is still convinced there is something seriously wrong with her!   She has every illness under the sun according to her and this has stopped her living a full life.  Please don't let the same happen to you.  x
