Possible MS?

Hello,

About a month ago, I had severe pain in my chest which was diagnosed as costochondritis that was likely due to a really bad cold I had had a week before. A couple days later, I started to get tingling in my hands and feet and the muscles in my left cheek started to get numb/tight. All of these symptoms would come and go. A few days later, I started getting burning in my hands and feet and some joint pain. I went to my primary physician, who said I likely had a lingering virus and was overly stressed. He ran my bloodwork and everything came back normal. A couple days later, I started to get better, and then all the symptoms returned, and I began experiencing burning in my legs and occasionally my arms. Then I woke up with a lot of soreness in my legs with numbness in my hands and feet, as well as some muscle spasms. I went back to my physician who thought it could still be a lingering virus coupled with a sinus infection that I had been battling, so he prescribed me a 10 day course of a Z pack, and told me to see a neurologist if my symptoms didn't improve. Today I woke up with my back as stiff as a board and pain in my neck. All this has happened within a months time. Prior to this, I was a perfectly healthy 24 year old and now I wake up everyday worse and worse. Could this be MS or a more serious condition? Is it possible that it could just be a nasty virus causing this?

Thanks so much,

Sara

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with MS. I had my first episode 5 years ago, and it has taken them this long to diagnose me. I didn’t have any joint pain as such but every day I wake up stiff and sore. Your chest pain could possibly be an “MS hug” which feels like a tight band around your chest? You should google this.  :-)

My gosh! This sounds like exactly what I have!!. I have all the pins and needles, tightness in my limbs. But now I have severe muscles spasms in my legs with now leg and hip pain. I feel as stiff as a board when I wake and my hands are very stiff and sore. I have made an appointment with doctors....I was thinking MS too.

Hi Sara! Of course I am not a doctor, but I have been going through similar symptoms (plus about 20 more) and have been trying to get a diagnosis for almost 10 years now and have done TONS of research on this, including forums like this where people talk about their symptoms, so I am somewhat familiar with it and feel your symptoms could definitely be MS. My most debilitating symptoms are chronic fatigue and heat/cold intolerance. It can be 90 degrees out and I am sweating with goose bumps with my teeth chattering and my skin feel cold/clammy to the touch. I myself finally found a good doctor who listens to me and she ran the RIGHT tests (most docs run very basic blood work, which really won't help) and I am very close to being diagnosed with MS. I say that because they have ruled out almost everything else and after my new doctor suggested that it sounds like MS might be what I have I started researching it and was shocked at all the MS symptoms that I have. It really never crossed my mind. Some symptoms I never even told her about at first because other specialists had diagnosed them away as other diseases...for instance my migraines, photophobia, lack of smell/taste, loss of balance, vertigo & tinnitus (ringing of ears) were all diagnosed by an ENT as Miniere's Disease. Also, peripheral neuropathy symptoms that come and go and tremors were explained as stemming from my herniated discs. Now that my new doc has ALL of my symptoms together, the picture is much clearer. Btw, I was sent to the ER 8 months ago during a severe "flare-up", which happened 3 days after receiving a flu shot, only to be told I had a virus, too! The fact that this all came on so sudden for you leads me to believe it isn't anything due to herniations or anything like that. My own symptoms started one day out of no where, too.  I was 38 and very healthy when all of this started and now, after battling this with no treatment for almost a decade, I am a fraction of what I used to be and it can be very depressing.  I am so sorry you are going through this at such a young age, no matter what it is you end up being diagnosed with.  My daughter is your age and I would be devastated if she were to be going through what you are. Please get a second opinion and don't give up until YOU feel content with your diagnosis. And please keep me posted on what you find out.  Feel better, you are in my prayers! confused
