Hi Jean,my first couple of flares only my legs and pelvic girdle. It is only my current flare that has affected my shoulders and arms. The only chest pain I have had is from my asthma and angina never PMR .

It could be PMR just in your legs. Did you have a blood test for ESR and CRP? You can take steroids for a week or so to see if they help and just stop if there is no improvement, when it probably is not PMR. I assume your doctor will have discounted other things already.

    Hello Jean.

Dont worry about taking steroids. If it is PMR you will see the benefits fairly quickly. If it isn't PMR then you will be off them after a short while with no after effects. We all had the same thoughts about going on the "demon steroids" at the beginning of our journey but learn to see it as our friend in the end.

Best of luck and read as much on this forum as you can. You will get more relevant information here than with most GPs.

When I was first diagnosed with PMR my pain was in my groin and

upper front thighs.   My doc had a light bulb moment when I struggled

to get up out of a chair.  He did sed rate right then and it came back

92, so easy for him to know what was wrong with me....After reading

these blogs for a while you will see that everyone has their own

set of symptoms and no two people are alike.  Will also find that

reaction to pred is unique among patients.....it's really a crap shoot

    kind of disease......good luck....

Everyone is different on where their pain hits. I've never had any in my chest and my shoulders were one of the last places I felt it. My calf and big toe joint were the first places, then it progressed to very severe groin pain, then upper thigh, then lastly to my shoulder joints and upper arm muscles. Prednisone was a lifesaver for me, because at that point I could barely move, or lay down, and the pain was horrendous. The prednisones saved me. It's definitely not my favorite medication, but I wouldn't be up walking around without it. Good luck!
