Possible reflux that doesn't seem like normal- only happens randomly and infrequently...Help! :D

Hi! I have a weird thing that comes and goes infrequently - each time it’s happened I’ve presumed it’s a form of acid reflux simply because I can’t find anything else.

It feels like this:

Suddenly I start getting discomfort in my chest / oesophagus. It can sometimes feel a bit like a bubble of air trapped. It gets a lot worse quickly, and gets to the point where I can hardly move around as the tightness in my chest is so bad. I can’t sleep at night (without 6 pillows!) or bend over. I end up breathing really shallowly because taking a big breath is really painful and makes me gasp. I get a headache and sometimes a tight throat.

I have no other symptoms such as burping or obvious wind, or bringing up weird tastes or stomach pain or bad breath…

But here’s the thing – I only get this once every several months or once a year with no other related symptoms at any other time. Anddddd - when it starts I know it will last for about 5-7 days without any let-up. No Gaviscon or heartburn pills help. No changing of my diet helps. It will be constant with no change if I eat or don’t eat. I just have to (try to) sleep sitting up for a week and then it finally goes way.

And then it may not come back for several months or a year. The rest of the time I have no reflux type symptoms…

The only thing that I can say for the last two times that it’s happens I’ve been mildly (mildly!) anxiety or had an event that’s made me a bit stressed on the day it starts. But nothing major.

Last time the doc said it didn’t sound like acid reflux.

Any one else had something similar? Thanks! Rebecca
