Possible torn ligament after ankle sprain

Posted , 3 users are following.

About 2 1/2 months ago I sprained my ankle. I could not walk on it for the first 12 hours or so, but decided not to visit a doctor because I thought it was just a sprain. I stopped working out to let it heal. I started back working out, and have noticed pain, mainly when I do not work out. It's a dull, nagging pain, that causes me to have trouble walking in the morning. When I do run, I don't have much pain. It's more when I am not working out. The pain is on the lateral side of my ankle, and sometimes hurts where the ankle and foot meet.

Do you think I have torn something, that may have done more damage than a sprain? Should I get this checked out? With it being almost three months, I feel like the sprain has healed.

    Hi Kaysie,

It doesn't hurt to go have an MRI done on the ankle. Just to rule out.  Playing around with the ankle, ligaments and so on is no joke.

    Best of luck to you!

    Kaysie,

Good to hear from you again.

So sorry that your ankle issues have not resolved yet.

After 2 1/2 months you still have pain so that is not a real promising sign. You stated it is mainly a problem when you are inactive versus working out-- that is curious and I wonder why because it is so counter intuitive.

If your pain doesn't diminish soon I would highly recommend seeing a sports medicine ankle specialist to investigate if you have any soft tissue involvement (could be anything from ligaments to tendons to muscles and what have you).

I always advocate an ongoing, disciplined ankle rehab regimen after ankle injuries to get permanent healing and forestall chronic ankle instability and arthritis later on in life. Such advice seems to fall on deaf ears for most people but I hope you will consider it.

    Good luck.
