Post anterior hip replacement pain

i had my second anterior hip replacement on Tuesday 3dec and was home on wednesday . I had my last replacement 18 months ago with virtually no pain, just the odd paracetamolThis time the pain is a lot worse bu not unmanageable , my ability to walk is worse but i only need 1 stick, it just shows how different each surgery for the same complaint can be .Another factor can be the operating table. My last surgeon had a special table especially for the anterior approach so ive a feeling this made it easier. My surgeon this time did warn me of the disadvantage as he did not have the table so more pulling around. I was awake all the way through which as a retired nhs employee was what i wanted we have to remember that every surgical pain is different

best wishes on your recovery. it's very early days if you only had your OP this week but as you say every OP is different so your recovery will be.

It is so interesting hearing your story. 1 stick already! Both mine (10 months apart) have been posterior and on both occasions I was under general. I had the same surgeon. This one has been far quicker recovery wise - part of which i put down to a lot of hard work before strengthening the whole leg and hip.

As a rule, do anterior patients recover quicker?

My sister had both hips with direct anterior within the last two years. Even though I am having issues with my second hip my recovery is still quicker than hers was. I was on stairs one hour after my surgery and then came home. Third hip scary. What happened?

u were on the stairs an hr after? omg I couldnt even walk to the bathroom or get out of bed when I was in recovery room after the surgery I remember waking up screaming and crying didnt get any sleep the last 3 days surgery was on tues and last night I accidentally rolled over in the middle of the night and such a huge black and blue bruise. and it's weird cause my last 2 hip surgerys I never bruised only where the incision was now it's all down my left side and stiff and hard so so very painful. and I cant really feel my bladder I can feel when I have to go but then I sit there for 20 mins and finally go pee. never had those issues before and the dr changed the stem as the bone wasnt growing into the implant. and he changed the ball and socket last yr dec18th. drs office just called today and surgeon wants to see me at the hospital so he can do a wound check and take staples out which is funny cause hes never checked on before or taken the staples out of me the home care people

Did you have a spinal? It took a couple of hours for me to "unfreeze".

      Hi Nicole,

Yes I had same day surgery, the criteria for that was doing a flight of stairs, dressing myself and walking. I was able to pee right away. I was home two hours after my surgery for both hips. I showered the next morning. My doctor used glue for my incision. I still have steri-strips on. My sister had direct anterior on both hips and did having issues with bladder after. I think that is a side effect of the anterior approach. My recovery was so much easier than hers, except for my damn knee pain from three weeks ago surgery.Hope your visit went well today. My first hip surgery in January this year I had extreme bruising from my butt to my ankle. This surgery hardly any bruising.

I just want my KNEE TO STOP HURTING.

I am just going crazy here being home.

    Hi Janey,

I had lateral posterior on both hip. My right hip was so easy. I had same day surgery with no general anesthesia. I can't take narcotic pain meds they make me so sick. My knee pain four days after surgery was the worst pain I ever had in my life. My left leg is so stiff above my knee and my knee still hurts. My last hip I was off the walker at this time. I thought this surgery would be the same, it is totally different, even they I had the same surgeon and this hip wasn't as bad as my right. I am so inpatient. Thanks for you response.

im the same as you ! but my knee is easing off now ! im 4 weeks post op and had my other hip done only 10months ago and it was different ! this time it was definatly more painfull !! but im now down to 1 crutch mostly and im doing chores like cooking and washing with the aid of a grabber …this is was also not as bad as the other one! my surgeon did tell me it would be harder this time round and he was right although im realy getting on and healing well ! also my other incision was only half the size of this one !this one us huge so that why im guessing it was more painfull as more muscle was cut … i had the same surgeon so im not sure why but ill ask him when i see him in my follow

Today is FIVE weeks since my 2nd THR of my left hip. My left knee is still KILLING ME. I see the surgeon tomorrow and I am scheduled to have an MRI 12/26/19. I still can't weight bear on my left leg without assistance. Needless to say and I am annoyed and nervous about this pain not going away.
