Post Colonoscopy problems

I had this done two weeks ago, they found Diverticula. The reason I had this was I was having problmes with bloating and diarrhea. However since I had this done the problems I had before it have got worse, Gp says it will settle down, but today had severe diarrhea, took loperamide which did not stop it. I wasn't this bad before the Colonoscopy. Everything I eat seems to just go through me.

You should not take loperamide as constipation is very bad for someone with diverticular. I have diahorea every day since gall bladder was removed 5yrs ago. Try fibrogel, and diaorlyte sachets. Hope you are feeling better soon

I am not constipated though. My GP prescribes me Loperamide.

Your doctor should not prescribe loperamide knowing you have diverticular. I saw my consultant last week and that is what she told me.

Ian, your procedure was so recent you'd be advised to contact the hospital team.  You should find the contact details on your paperwork. Give them a call, it's not right.  If there is blood get down to A&E if you've missed clinic times this week.

No blood. I spoke to the Hospistal the day after and they said they never have had anyone else with this problem. Gave GP a stool sample all ok.

This week as the colonoscopy tests were OK hospital wrote  discharging me. I rang PALS to complain.

It's one of those things the GP doesn't have the kit to do in his surgery.  The worst case complication of colonoscopy is a rupture in the bowel.  I would get down to A&E myself, and I am not one to do that.  Choose a quiet time, often 6-8am.  It is worth getting out of bed for that as the drunks and fight victims are away.  If you are soldiering on then keep an eye on your temperature and abdominal pain. If you are passing lots of fluid then you need to rehydrate.  You can make your own dioralyte with tap water, salt and sugar.  http://rehydrate.org/solutions/homemade.htm#recipe ; Good luck, let us know how you get on smile

Thanks Tom. I know its not a rupture, GP siad if it was I would be in a hell of a lot of pain. Thankfuly this morning I am OK, but still going to seek further medical advice. I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall though trying to get answers.

I was like that for 3 weeks after mine Ian, I have irritable bowel and Diverticulitis,I'm sure your doctor will sort it out for you, what I did learn, and something I didn't know was,you can take as many Loperamide as it takes to stop it. 4 if need be, I thought you could only take 1 or 2,but that's not the case at all. Good luck and let us know how you go

Thanks Pat. Its almost three weeks for me. I took 9 Loperamide yesterday, supposed to only take 8 in day. I am waiting for a Dr to come and visit me. Had to fight to get hin though. Told to go to a walk in centre, I said I can't as I need to be near the toilet, I mean does he expect me to wear a nappy?!
