Post op/Ankle surgery

Hi!

I broke my tib/fib as well as dislocated it about 5 weeks ago, and had surgery about 4 weeks ago. The pain has gone down significantly to where I am comfortable most of the day. I still haven't been able to be placed in a hard cast because I have a lot of swelling, so I am still in a plaster splint.

My question here is, even without the pain has anyone had any trouble sleeping? I have resorted to taking sleeping pills (over the counter) and I can still only get 3-4 hrs per night. Maybe it's because i'm sleeping in a recliner?

Also, around what time do you find you guys are back to your normal life? I'm eager to get up and run again and walk without pain. I have been non weight bearing for so long that I am going crazy for more mobility.

Be very careful with sleeping pills. If you get up to go to loo, you could easily fall over.

I was nearly 7 months non weight baring. Broke fibula in half 39 weeks ago. Dislocated ankle. Never healed. After 4 months I had surgery, bone graft and plate with 6 screws. Kinda went like this:-

*Fell down stairs. Heard a snap. Agony. Called Ambulance. They said it wasn't broken.

*Got up on crutches in night, fell unconscious, face planted, broke a rib, and damaged shoulder.

*Saw Dr a couple of days later. Xray showed snap, and displacement. No specialist or Dr to look at it for another 10 days. Manually shoved into place with not pain relief.

*Sent home. No sleep, to speak of , bar 30 mins here and there.

    Prescribed panadol, ibuprofen, and codeine.

    *Got a knee scooter.

    * Put leg up on pillows. Hurt a lot, sleeping on back a nuisance.

    R.I.C.E

*I Slept in a bed, with a bed lift device. Easy to get in and out. Easier than a chair.

*Raised chair on blocks, shower bench slide, shower waterproof leg protector, crutches with wide bottoms, bed cradle to stop weight of blankets.

*Endless hours of potential boredom filled with hobbies. Ukulele, reading, T.V and PS4 games,a adults colouring book and a Teddy Bear!??

    * Husband broke his hand at my third week.

*Double frustration. Half time change ends of house.

    Welcome to the bone club.

It Does GET BETTER. I am living proof.

Enjoy little moments. Surrender yourself to letting your body repair. Do what Physio and Specialist say. 6 weeks after my surgery, my physio taught me to sleep in the recovery position at brief intervals , using pillows. Helped my back.

Physio came to house, 2 for price of 1 lol. His hand, my foot.

We've been up and down many a time . But alas, the down times are less.( apart from the fact we both needed surgery and have been slow recovering. And my husband lost his job , in a work related accident , the fault of his boss)

Sleeping is hard when we don't get physically tired. Plus reliving the accident saw me having many a nightmare.

Try a bed. Heaps of pillows. Get Physio to help with best ways.

I too felt I was never going to sleep properly again

But I started sleeping much better 3 months after my op. I've shed many a tear. Wanted to give up, But have supportive people on hand. ??

I can now walk unaided most of day, and use a Walker with large wheels and a seat when I'm tired. I still use my knee scooter at night. Never thought I'd say this, but I'm nearly out of the tunnel.

    Good luck.

Let us all know how you get on.

Oh wow! That sounds terrible, how are you feeling now??

The doctor gave me some melatonin to help me with sleep and I've been taking 6mg for the past 2 nights and it really has helped. But after reading this i will bring it down to 3mg because I would hate to fall in the middle of the night.

My doctor's appointment was last Friday and I am still non weight bearing, but she put me in a black boot and said I can take it off to shower and I can take it off to start doing exercises to get some mobility back to my ankle. It's really stiff and I still have pain but it feels great to be working towards something!

I hope you are back to normal and that you have no pain!!

Glad things are getting better Tituscanby! Every week you will see improvement. Hang in there! Now I can wear any flat shoes at 20 weeks out, even flip flops. I can do everything in every day life, except running. My plate and 13 screws aren't bothering me, even though I still dream of someday taking them out. I'm still a little stiff in the mornings and it takes stretching to loosen up and I'm a bit tight on the inner ankle. I don't quite have full range pointing my toe, but it's getting closer week by week and my full foot flex is great now. I go to PT once a week and am glad I do. I went to a concert Friday night and didn't worry about my ankle at all. I can keep up walking with anyone, and unless they know me and what I have been through, they probably wouldn't notice anything different about me while walking. If they look really closely, they may see the very slightest limp, if I forget to walk with a long gait is all. Life is good now though. Sleeing great with my compression sock at night.  I can't complain. I finally feel really normal. You will get there everybody!
