Post Op Hemaroids Question

Posted , 4 users are following.

I wonder if someone could shed soe light on this, had the Haemorrhoidectomy just about two weeks ago and during the first week I was wishing that I hadn't. When the time to do the business came I had to help it along a few times by gently squeezing the muscles to help the hemorrhoids come out, tiny little bleeders but painful. The main question is that even now I still have two of the external lumps showing, are they going to go away in time? I was told that I was also getting a tidy up as well, he mentioned hitching up a pair of trousers as things needed to be tucked. Yesterday when I was cleaning up I found a stitch which has me worried as well. Any help or info on this will be appreciated.

Hey Paul. The swelling you are feeling is normal post op for a hemerhoidectomy. It will feel just like a new hemmerhoid which can be very discouraging, but it will start to go down. I’m at week 5 now myself and while it’s still there and quite annoying, it’s starting to go down. Most people report a major improvement in the swelling from week 5-7.

You should be over the jump though with most of the pain though. It mainly starts to become discomfort at this point.

pita, have a question, starting to see some blood post BM every other day, clean and bright. Is this normal or should I be worried (in week 4 now).

Really depends on how much exactly you're seeing. If it's just dripping out of you that could be concerning but if it's spotting on toilet paper / pads, it's probably normal. Regardless, I'd schedule a follow up with your surgeon just to be on the safe side. I had a follow up at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and now again at 8 weeks (next week).

The wounds tend to heal up, open, heal up, repeat in my experience as you're healing. I'm at week 7 now and I still have some swelling but it is finally going back down. I don't have any blood, but I still notice a sharp stinging pain that turns to a burning/ aching after a larger bowel movement. I also seem more narrow down there now, so I do get concerned I developed a fissure. Generally post op, if it's not the wound bleeding or hurting it's probably going to be a fissure. I'll be finding out about that myself when I see my surgeon again in a few days. Hopefully I don't end up with a chronic fissure and end up needing another surgery...

Hang in there, it can really be a long recovery as I've found. There have been a lot of moments for me of "oh I feel better" followed by a new pain in a new area. Just hang in there, try to eat well and keep taking stool softeners and fiber if you can tollerate it.

Thanks for the reply, have scheduled to see the surgeon on the 25th Oct. The blood is just at the end when its wiped so no major dripping. Same as you every now and then a sharp stab of pain just to remind me that it's still there, no pain during BM which is good. The two lumps are still there but in my opinion they are getting smaller, Sometimes they increase in size but do go down. I had a fissure last last year and boy was it interesting, had to have it rescared as it wasn't healing, now it's OK so I can sympathise with you. Still taking fybogel, tastes lice crap but it helps.

i am 17 days in and have dripping blood with some more explosive bowel movements. I'm getting really concerned as it is happening more frequently.

if you are dripping blood go to A&E to get it seen to, flowing blood is not a good thing.

Hi, thanks for the reply, it's good to know as I was really getting worried. Had an infection post op and they gave me some decent antiinflamitory and painkiller drugs. The bleeding is also slowly going away. Every once in a while a sharp stab of pain lets me know that it's still around. Have to admit that the initial pain was a hell of a lot more then I expected.

Yup I had the same exact thing. Infection week 1 and a halfish post op and went on a week of antibiotics for it. The discharge should start to go down after that. Now I just get a little bit after I've pooped.

You're in for a long ride though. Not saying that to discourage you, just to be realistic. It really starts to wear on you when it's been a month since surgery and you think something is wrong with you. Not everyone gets this post op swelling (everyone heals differently) but it seems like it might take people like us up to 8 weeks to be really back to pretty much normal from what I've read and experience so far. I'm at almost 5 weeks now and while I'm able to do most things, I'm still pretty sore and tender with a fair amount of swelling still. Really just feels a lot like a flared up hemorrhoid.

Best thing to do in the meantime is to try to keep your poop as soft as you can (without diarrhea) and keep taking NSAIDs for pain. Keep drinking lots of water and taking plenty of hot sitz baths with epsom salt. I'm still wearing women's underwear liners at 5 weeks to deal with the occasional leakage.

Have you had a harder time passing stool or had it coming out very thin? That's been something I've experienced and it really freaked me out that I had stenosis. I saw my surgeon though who assured me that it's just the swelling still and not stenosis, so that was reassuring.

After about week 2 and a half to 3, you should be in pretty good shape pain wise. I really only hurt after a bm (sort of a burning soreness) and it'd go away after a few min in a hot bath. I wasn't able to sit really until about week 4 because of that swelling poking out. It was very tender and sitting on it was painful. Sitting is still a little uncomfortable at this point too but its doable now.

Most of what I've experienced and seen online about the swelling is that it really doesn't seem to get better day by day. It's hard to describe, but I've noticed it myself. It seems like every Sunday I wake up and have made a little "leap" in the right direction with healing but on a day to day basis it just seems like it's not getting better at all and then all of a sudden I'll see a big improvement. You'll also have some set backs in the next few weeks too, so don't get discouraged. Just today after a week of pretty much no pain, I am very sore after having a little bit of a watery stool this morning. Just take it all in stride though and accept that full recovery from this is multi-month marathon.

      Hope that helps a bit.

thanks for all the info, now pretty much without serious pain, except when I go and everyonce in a while a sharp stab. Still a bit of a watery discharge and some blood in the stool but as it's nice and bright it looks OK. Will be at home for the next two weeks as I don't fancy bouncing around in the cab of my truck ans turning the air blue.

    Hi

These lumps are called skin tags. I two months , they will shrink but won’t go away .

Two weeks post op and not wanting to jinx it things have improved, almost pain free. Just a niggly bit here and there and 'stabs' of pain every so often just to remind me what went on and that it is not over yet. Almost no pain passing a BM and the 'lumps' are looking like decreasing in size.  Thanks to all that gave me reassurance and positive tips. Still some BM discharge but just a tiny bit as the opening is not completely healed.
