Post Op Hiatus hernia repair, pain after swallowing

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi there,

I am 4 days post op for a hiatus hernia which was 4cm big. I am still getting alot of pain in both shoulders due to the gas and wondered how long this would take to go? Also, after i swallow anything at all, even saliva, i have the feeling i need to burp, although nothing comes up except for a gnawing deep pressured sensation for about five seconds, does anybody else get this?

Thanks!

    Dearest Chloe,

dont panic it's only been 4 days it's hard I know having gone through the op which is bad enough we all expect instant relief.

because you are using this to eat drink etc it takes a little longer for it to heal that horrid feeling you ve swallowed a golf ball and searing pain in shoulders make you feel really scared that the op hasn't worked maybe quite as well as it should have. Just be gentle with yourself take your time make sure you chew all food very carefully better still try liquidising food I know sound bad but baby food is good right now helps ease the swallow.

another thing to try I grated some root ginger into boiling water waited for it to cool and sipped slowly gingers very healing and antiseptic it really helped calm my stomach it's also antispasmodic to the gut the thing is not to feel anxious as this makes all your muscles go into spasm  I reckon about 4 weeks should do it but every day you feel an improvement  albeit slight it will happen I promise, just be gentle and quiet and rest a lot if you can sleep is great gives you time to recover.

ps. Chew some gum helps produce more saliva helping food on its way.

best of luck time heals always.

Great. I have been eating yoghurt and soup mainly but still have the pain in the centre of my chest which is putting me off eating at all, i don't feel that it's going to ever go away!

    Hi Chloe,

Not positive but the dairy in the yogurt may be an irratant right now but the bacteria in yogurt would be helpful so you might a probiotic supplement like trubiotics or other brand you can get at your drug store. They are good for everyday. If you don't feel you can swallow a capsule try the tea section in your grocery store. Some teas will have probioticsalso and there is a tea that is meant to soothe your throat usually. Meant for sore throat but it may help calm the feeling you have as well.  You might try a anti gas product too just for some pressure relief. Gasx, physym something that isn't    an antacid only.  And just be patient as Boho mention rest and as little worrying as possible. Stress does not help at all. Best regards.

I will give it a go. Do you ever get the feeling that food or a burp wants to come back up, and it causes a real intense pain in your chest and shoulders?

That is probably the air bubble or gas. If you had water or something go down the wrong way it has that same kind of feeling. Sharp breath taking pain.  It can be painful that is why I suggested something for gas relief but as with anything if it keeps persisting talk to your doctor.   Best of luck and let me know how things go.

Hi Chloe, don't worry too much about the gas, it will go away after a week or so. I had the operation, both hiatus hernia and reflux op together. The saliva thing was what I noticed at first, loads of it and almost dribbling but it soon went. Your stomach has to adjust.

You may find this amusing I don't know. I used to be sick, vomit every day due to the reflux and belched a lot after food etc. After my op in 1999 I found I could not belch at all, it became a one way system so the only way was to pass wind (fart). otherwise it was painful not to expel the air.

Since 1999 I have never been sick, (vomited) still have the odd bit of acid burn but can count on one hand how many times.

I also found that I could not eat very much at all which was a good diet aid, just try and eat little and often, a few mouthfulls then give your tummy time to digest it properly, then have a bit more. The more weight you can keep off yourself the better.
