Post op of rolling hiatus hernia

Posted , 4 users are following.

i had my operation on October 27 . I have been on a soft food diet since I left the hospital . Tonight I made rice, green beans and baked salmon. The rice I've had before but I didn't cook it quite enough. It got stuck and hurt like hell. I can vomit after my operation. Since that happened I'm worried because I know they don't want pressure on that area. Has this ever happened to anyone and were you okay after?

    Hi Judy

Not to me anyway and while I have a sliding Hiatus Hernia it doesn't seem to bother me and was only picked up on the CT scan. I was put on Lansoprazole and this seems to work for me.

All I can suggest is if you are worried or have any apprehension about your condition, then go back and see your GP; I am sure he will allay any fears you may have.

    Argzxoni,

my operation was two hours long and I remember commenting on the very modern operating room with loads of tv cameras and other technology before they put me out.

They made five incisions, one I know was to put in a retractor to hold the liver back , another for the camera.

They inflate the abdomen with gas so the doctor can work easier. The stomach is then incised from its sac and pulled back down below the diaphragm. Then the top end of the stomach, called the fundus is wrapped around the esophagus. This anchors the stomach to prevent it from moving back up again. I don't know if he staples or sewed the fundus together. I was in recovery for five hours because I have a lot of problems with general anesthetic. When I woke up I was soooooooo dry and very nauseous. They gave me seven different drugs to try and stop the nausea. The next day I was on a liquid diet all day. The next day I was still in the hospital and they gave me some soft food before I was discharged in the afternoon.

I have been doing really well until last night when rice got stuck in my esophagus. I had more pains in the middle of the night. I could have my porridge this morning without a problem . Judy

Hi Judy  I had this op earlier this year and on leaving hospital was only told to eat 'soft' food. Scrambled eggs are great. The problem with rice is that it can 'clump' in the throat rather like bread. If you are struggling with what to eat I can dig out my diet advice sheets.Little and often is obviously the best.It took me at least 8weeks before I ate without worrying too much and then big meals are still definately out.I had an open clip for a couple of months which got infected then when taken out and sewed/glued up gave me other problems as mentioned n my earlier blog.Do hope you doing ok
