Post op Peroneal tendon surgery week 5 questions

Hello foot & ankle friends;

I am curious if any of you had also had peroneal tendon surgery; I am currently post op starting 5 weeks and let's say it's been fairly painful and a lot more intense than I was prepared for. The surgery went well, the first 2 weeks I was basically bedrest and in a splint/wrap. Then after 2 weeks the stitches were removed, lets just say I was not mentally or physically prepared for how large the incision was and I almost had a breakdown in the drs office. Ekk! That being said, I was then put into a hard cast for 4 weeks, I have 9 days left of the hard cast and from there I believe I am put into a walking boot for 6 more weeks with PT.

My question is this; 5 weeks post op is it still normal to have numbess, tingliness and a lot of pain? Also I am still not able to put weight down on the ankle. The dr. confirmed that this is all normal due to the fact that this was a major surgery but I still have worries. My concern is the dr puts me in a walking cast and I really can't walk, what am I going to do? I also have nightmares of PT and how painful it is going to be.

For a little reference I played college soccer and I am a runner, and I want to do everything possible to get back to where I was before the injury.

Thank you for all the info.

Signed post op concerns Danielle. :-)

I had the same procedure you did on

5-12-17.  At this point I have played competitive basketball two weeks in a row now (with a brace).  My ankle is like 15% stiff still in the morning and sometimes random pain still.  My leg is still slightly atrophied but I’m getting there.   Recovery felt like it took forever but once your done with 6 weeks no pressure and used to walking in your boot it gets easier.   Your first day of pt you will lose the boot totally even tho you won’t feel ready.  I feel like my ankle is almost back to normal now

I know this is a few years later but I was wondering how your recovery went. I'm about to have the same surgery and I'm an avid runner. I'm concerned I won't be able to run again. Thank you!

You will be able to run again fine.  If you have to sprint full speed skipping from stone to stone as you run that will probably take you a year after surgery.  On a more serious note you will be fine running on flat surfaces.

Hi, I'm three weeks out from peroneal (both tendons torn) repair and Calcaneous Extosis. Thus far, guess I'm lucky, no real pain, I get twinges if it gets bent a bit and I feel pressure on my heal . I was in a splint for 16 days then transitioned into a walking boot last Friday. I take the boot off a few times a day to let it dry out and give my leg some air.

The Aircast XP gets wet with sweat, my incision is not quite scab free, so I'm nervous about bacteria, should the dampness soften the scab and it opens up. I experienced a little pulling with the removal of the stitches, just a brief stinging sensation.

I've been using an iWalk to get around, as well as a wheeled walker that I scoot around the house on (I rest my booted leg on the seat of the walker and scoot around on my good leg). I've actually gone out on some nice afternoons with friends walking our dogs. I use the iWalk and steady myself with the walker.

The only problem with the iWalk is that you have to remove it each time you sit down, as it forces your foot into the floor.

Physical therapy starts tomorrow, even with another week of non weight-bearing. I've read that some people have been having real issues with pain, so far I've not experienced that. I'm sure things will change with physical therapy and weight-bearing.

hello i know its been awhile since you posted in here but im on a similar recovery path as you. I am supposed to transition to cast at my first post op checkup. How was the transition? cast vs splint?? Did the 4 weeks go by fast??

*The cast is going to be more uncomfortable for sure. But it feels more protected. You are going to need a knee wheeler type deal. Good luck! you got the surgery at the perfect time for self quarantine.

Doc just called me and they are cancelling clinics for the next 2 weeks 😕. Was supposed to get the cast on Monday. He said my stitches are on the inside so he’s ok with leaving me in the post op splint until he can eventually see me. Risk of infection is lower and my splint was put on in the sterile OR. Wasn’t looking forward to sitting in a cast for 4 weeks anyways. Crazy times.

Do all the pt they tell you to do, daily. Really be sure you keep your muscles working and toned as you heal.

Hello. I had peroneal tendon repair and the brostrom procedure as well as a chipped bone removed on may 11. I was put in a partial cast and had it removed may 20th. I was put in a boot and I'm walking a little bit and using my knee scooter as well. I get my stitches out on may26th and I've had no trouble. I've not had to take any kind of pain medication thank God and actually I have only taken 2 motrin 400mgs daily along with my 325 of aspirin for blood clot precautions. All and all upmc did a remarkable job with my ankle and I'll take it slow for a couple more weeks and sleep with my boot off and the key for me was keeping it well elevated for the first week.
