    Hi Hippy.

If you are still walking with a limp go and see your GP and ask for a review with the consultant who did your opp.

If you dont feel safe using one crutch then dont, everyone recover at different time, try using just one when you're in doors where it's safe, then take it from there.

Am 9 months pre op and i still take my walking stick with me when am out and about, for safety. I've saw my consultant this week and everything going well just need to build up the muscle in the opp leg more. also he mention that it will take 2 years for me to feel and get the benifiet from the new hip.

Your body will let you know when you're ready. Just take one stept at a time.

    Good Luck

    Hi Hippy1951,

I wonder if one leg is longer if you still limp but have no pain. Perhaps you could inquire about this?

My other thought is to ask if you are walking in proper form such as heel toe while trying to not give into the limp.

    Wish you the best!

hi Dawn before the op my operated side was shorter but now they are both the same leg length but i was having problems with my good side and was told it may be all the strain from putting all my weight on it before having the op. yes i do walk heel to toe just worried that before op i could manage with cane and now i am still on 2 crutches maybe the muscles on my good side have to accept the new hip as well all the best to you

Hi Hippy, I had left hip revision a couple of weeks before you, and am using one crutch. Like Carmen says, we all heal at different rates, and if it doesn't feel right yet, wait a bit. Are you doing your exercises? (Must admit mine have lapsed a bit lately!)

I have been trying using just a stick around the house, but you can't brace yourself the same way and I just feel a bit unstable, but will keep practicing. Let your body tell you when you're ready for the next phase and be reassured that the x-rays showed everything was fine. It does take a long time to heal completely but you will get there.

Good morning, I had hip replacement five months ago. Was left with nerve pain and numbness in my leg and foot. Docs says some people have the nerve pain afterwords at it, should, go away. Now my leg and foot are still numb, but it's my right arm and foot, are the ones that are in pain I believe from using my right side to compensate. So even though I don't want to be left with the numbness, I believe when the muscle soreness in my right goes away I'll be able to get around. Some days I can use a cane, but some days I need the walker. I am trying to get up and do little things more often.  Everyone says it's the cold weather. I don't want to go through this through the whole winter.

I know, I also hear I should be doing better by now. When the warm weather was here I was doing better. Hang in there okay?

Hi everyone is different on recovery.i used one crutch but when tired i needed to use two of them. My physio said its better to walk with a aid that not too and struggle. If you have any concerns seek advice from gp/consultant

    Hi Hippy,

I am exactly one year Post THR (due to fall) and still will not - cannot- go outside without my walking stick.  I seem to have lost all confidence and literally FREEZE when a child or animal comes near me, as I'm terrified of falling again.  However, indoors I walk without any aid.   So don't worry, it's very early days for you.  Hope you keep well.

Hi this process takes some time depending on the exercise regime you carried out or how your physiotherapist is stretching your leg and exercising you.

This is a process that works differently with everyone. Its an individual healing process. I stopped using the cane after 2 months of therapy. I was afraid of falling injury to the hip. I walked with a slight of a limp but thats because of my muscle healing. I had the posterior done so the muscles and tendons were cut and sewn back that takes time to heal. so It is expected for your limp but it will go away with time. All depends on you. Dont over do things that may cause injury to your hip or risk of displocation. Follow your pysiotherapist or doctor's instructions.

Im 6 months post op (july 17, 2014).

Yesterday at work had my first fall. I am a carpenter working on a construction site and oblivious to a long piece of drywall against the wall that extends and obstructs the entry way of a room. I tripped over that drywall, brooke the drywall and fall. But my right operated leg was vertical postitioned after the fall as if i was kneeling down with my operated leg. Thanks God no injury to my right hip.

Would your GP refer you for some physio? I think it would make you feel better and give you more confidence if you were able to get some. I am not a fan of the giving a leaflet with exercises and leaving you to get on with it and no follow-up.
