Does anyone with plates and screws ever feel like they are pinching or biting your ankle?   I get these sharp bites feeling a couple times a day.   Pushing on it helps.   I am almost 2 years post injury.

Also so still swells really badly when on feet a lot.  Still????  This pic is of my swelling recently.

First 20 days I was on second plaster after that.

The pain was controlled ibrofene, paracetamol.

This kept the pain under control.

No weight bearing for 12 weeks I was then partially 50 percent crutches rocker boot.

Six monthes in rocker boot no longer needed.

Coping with two walking sticks full movement in foot some swelling after being on it a few hrs.

The swelling goes down quite quick when foot is Elavated.

    Most days it's pritty good.

The bump I had I had two breaks off fibula.

    Dislocated foot off tal.

    Its defanitly improving but slow.

Four internal fixations one side one the other.

i will be six months out from my initial surgery in a week. I've had a total of three surgeries so far. initial surgery aug 23 2019 bimaleor fracture with syndesmotic injury. plate and seven screws installed two of which were syndesmotic. second surgery oct 18, 2019 to remove one syndesmotic screw that was sticking out an inch!!! third surgery dec 20,2019 to remove second syndrsmotic screw that i was told was going to break. was really scared after this last surgery as everything felt so loose. feeling better in that respect as things have "tightened" up a bit and I'm less afraid of walking . i think i could probably go down stairs normally now...mechanically speaking but it still hurts so I'm avoiding it. limping less. feeling quite depressed as i fear there will be another surgery to take out the remaining 5 screws and plate. the slightest brush against the hardware side sends me over the edge...bed sheets or pants touching it...weirdly i have a lot of pain on the other side of ankle where they did nothing. no explanation from doctor. i think he is tired of seeing me..and wishes i would just quit complaining...me too!!

i broke it playing hide and seek with the grandkids. was running to hide (super competitive) when i realized i left the grandson behind. turned to go back and get him and I slipped on a plastic thing..fell off my favorite tall flip flops, looked down to see what i was slipping on. it was like slow motion. i saw my ankle was in a horribly unnatural "s" shape, then the pain hit me and i went down.

the pa is more sympathetic as he broke his ankle years ago. he is much younger than me, im 56 so thinking its not quite the same but at least he gets it sort of. surgeon probably has never broken a bone, in his life . he is very nice ...he just keeps saying how this is so routine he does this surgery all the time and its so easy. last surgery he was saying we will be done in 8 minutes ...reminded him i will be here for hours coming out of anesthesia. i feel i should be back to normal by now...but im not ...foot keeps randomly swelling up, ankle is always swollen. not sure what to do. its my right ankle and im very worried i wont be able to drive again after the bigger hardware removal..does anybody know the recovery time for that?

Hi, I had a distal tibial deportation operation. I'm currently 4 months post op. x Ray's are fine but the pain I have in my ankle opposite to my surgery is so painful it takes my breath away. I do have a screw that is rubbing on the other bone in my leg.

Any advice would be much appreciated or someone that also has this problem

One of my screws has come loose in my ankle and is rubbing against the muscle. It's bruised all around the area and it's causing my toes to go numb. It's also pushing against a nerve in my leg which is shooting pain all the way up to my hip.Has anyone dealt with that?

OMG...I have been having so much pain lately. I am 7 years post since the plates and screws were inserted. Having Awful level 10 pain in my whole leg it feels like my leg is getting ready to explode. Today I am limping and crawling can't stand on my right leg or foot at all. I'm scared there could be an infection or something going on caused by this Metal. I've always had episodes of pain in my foot and ankle but never shooting up my leg like this. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain before?

Just a possibility... one time I had leg pain shooting UP my leg. It was because my electrolytes were out of balance. You can hope that is the problem because it us an easy fix.

I am planning to have the metal removed as soon as possible in hopes that it is causing some of my pain.

The tibia has 2 screws no plate. During surgery they used 2 wires. It seems they are poking me from the inside. I haven't started walking yet so the pain is not too bad.

Many years ago I had a plate in my arm. When it was removed, pain was much better. The recovery after removal surgery was fast (especially compared to putting it in).

I broke my ankle 14yrs ago after "childproofing" my home. I broke the tibia and fibula. 7 screws and 2 plates. The past 3 days, I have been in excruciating pain. It feels like it's going to break. I've had this before where the pain comes on suddenly but disappears within minutes. This time, it is lingering. I will be walking fine and without warning- BOOM!!! I almost fall to the ground. You're not alone. I hope you find some relief.

Hi. I can very much relate. I had surgery in May 2021 for a serious break in 2 places on my right ankle. Plates, screws, rods. Still recovering, and although I'm weight bearing and able to "walk", I still have very little range of motion, and my ankle feels like it's frozen in plaster. And yes, like you I have sudden, sharp biting pain on the inner part of the ankle that takes my breath away.

Sometimes it feels like an electrical shock. My physiotherapist tells me it's nerve endings "waking up", but that seems odd since surgery was 4 months ago.

I'm now planning to see an osteopath along with physiotherapy.

    Wish you well...

I don't personally have intermittent swelling so much ad permanent. I also don't tend to feel any kind of pain associated. It does bother me though. Following to see what others say.image

I am 4 months post op if having my metal plates and screws taken out. ( I broke all 3 bones in my right ankle 9/3/2020. ) I am still having a lot of nerve pain. Sometimes biting, stiffness like my foot is entrapped in hard plastic, burning, tingling, electric shots. I was really hopeful when I had the hardware removed to get some relief. My surgeon also did orthoscopic procedure to remove scar tissue but I'm still experiencing pain every day. Has anyone else experienced this but found relief in time? Do the nerves ever calm down? I'm trying to stay hopefully optimistic.
