wow do I know what you are all going through and got the T Shirt. Hopefully Eileen will remember me. Steroid injections and I nearly decided not to marry my lovely husband

because of Polymyalgia

I have now been diagnosed with breast cancer and a recent mastectomy and lymph node clearance. The purpose of this post is to say that my surgeon wouldn’t operate whilst I was on steroids so I stopped them quickly. Along with help from my Rheumatologist we actually realised I was fine without them. Just maybe we don’t stop them and see what happens unless like me you have no choice. I’m now on more intrusive therapy which has worse side effects but YEY no more steroids x

Hi Hilary - sorry to hear the entire story - you did post about it didn't you?

So pleased your stopping pred worked well and your adrenal glands picked up the slack.

I think most of us do try to reduce to very low levels. I was on my way back down when a few months ago I realised my atrial fibrillation was going mad. At the time the PMR was OK on the 7mg I had got to - the a/f definitely wasn't but it was significantly better at 8mg and gone at 9mg. The rheumy just looked baffled and I can't get to see a cardiologist to discuss it. But I can't function with 5 or 6 hours of a/f all afternoon which is what was happening. I'm not on this dose for pleasure believe me!

All the best - and best wishes to that lovely husband!

    Hilary Hi there

I hope this little post will find you well on the road to recovery dear..

What a dreadful journey you have been on, but I'm sure, with the support of your family and friends , that you will realize that it's a set back and not defeat.

Appreciate your post and input to this group, especially Eileen, it does help others who may be in a similar situation where you have been...

I'm pretty new here to this lovely helpful group and I must say that they have more insight to pmr than my rheumatologist...

I've got a problem with three capped teeth at the back. Since taking the preds, started at 25mg. Down now to 22:5. My gums have shrank ( wish it was my belly , that's grown bigger ) and left a small gap. Every time I drink hot tea ( which is fairly often) I have pains.

I understand that dentists won't do any treatment whilst I'm on prednisone.

Anyway Hilary, keep us informed how you are getting on.

    Huge hugs

    Di

Do you mean it is the teeth that are sensitive? Try using toothpaste for sensitive teeth - it is a pretty common problem and many people find that helps. I use Sensodyne as none of the others worked for me. One lady said she was told by her dentist to rub the toothpaste directly onto her teeth and not rinse it off!

There is no reason at all for a dentist not to do dental work while you are on pred - I have had an extraction of a wisdome tooth that was growing crookedly and a crown fitted. Others I know have even had implant done while on pred. Some dentists are very wary about doing invasive dental work on patients who are taking a bisphosphonate for their bones - but even then it is often perfectly possible. Fillings and crowns and such things are fine. If a dentist says no it is more likely that they don't want the work...

      Hi Eileen

Thanks for replying. I now have a small hairline gap between the crowns ( three together) and my gum. If I drink hot or cold I get a sharp pain, which wears off.

That's a good idea regarding the sensadyne tooth paste. I'll try it out, it I will pay a visit to my dentist asap ...he loves money my dentist, so I'm sure he will treat me. 😊

Just I was worried if it was ok whilst on pred.

I think the dental concerns arise because so many of us are told to take osteoporosis drugs, and these do, indeed, impact dental work.  Problems from pred are vanishingly rare.

i have had significant gum recession, and my dentist agrees this is a result of the pred - too much of a coincidence that it occurred when I started pred having had excellent gums before.  They are, however, healthy, such as they are!  No other dental issues.
