Post Surgery-cancer spread

Posted , 6 users are following.

Looking for any advice on approaches to cancer spreading outside of the prostate. My Dad was at his one week post op appt and the doctor said the cancer spread outside of the prostate. His course of treatment is for my Dad to come back in 3 months for another PSA. To me and my siblings this seems like your giving time for whatever has gone wrong to spread further. Does anyone have similar experiences or thoughts on this approach?

We sure did in Reno, NV.  Doctor waited 6 weeks to operate on my husband to remove the prostate and when he went in he found the cancer had spread to the bladder neck.  He is now down in Phoenix, AZ at Cancer Treatment Center having 43 weeks of radiation therapy.  They're very confident they will be able to kill what cancer cells are already there and put him in remission.  It's a nail-biting experience for us both but with God's help and the great team of doctors we have there we can be successful.  Bad doctor advice in Reno from beginning.  Prayers are with you.

Thank you anthony70342, we're praying and having faith for remission too. How long did your husband wait after surgery to start the radiation therapy?

He had the surgery on 5/5 and had gone down to Phoenix CTCA 6/14 for intro to the center and then down again twice more for colonoscopy/endoscopy to make sure it hadn't spread there and then again in August for his "gps" to be entered into the prostate so that they knew each & every time where to aim the radiation.  He is currently receiving 45 treatments (not weeks). 25 radiation treatments and then 20 boosters (which is radiation directed at the "prostate bed" so that it doesn't grow back.  They (CTCA) pays for your travel and if a caregiver is needed they pay for him/her also. Check them out online.  Godspeed to you both.

Did he have a Axumin PET scan to detect psa cancer cells and where they're located?

His doctor hasn't even provided that much informaton to my Dad. I think that my Dad was in shock at this first appointment and didn't push for further information. My mom is going with him to his next follow up to remove his staples, I'm sure she'll push form more information then

Sorry to hear about your dads health issues. I think if it was me i would be asking for treatment to start asap. Recognise that he need a little time to start to heal from his surgery but waiting for three months seems too long.

It may well be that your dads Pc is one of the slow growing kinds but ask for more information and if your surgeon is not forthcoming go for a second opinion.

Hope your dad has a good outcome.

Hi, RP in 8/1/15......cancer had spread to nerve bundle. So mine was outside Prostate too. I had to wait 2 1/2 months for radiation treatment. Reason was to let everything heal. Don't be alarmed if psa reading after radiation is slightly high...mine was .08 30 days post radiation. Doctors said that was not unusual because radiation can cause the slight increase. Now I'm 26 months post operation and just had psa tested and was .01.....radiation can take care of bladder neck involvement too. Pat

Similar to me as well. Had prostate removed (robotic surgery). Psa was 1.1 six weeks after surgery so meant some stray cells must have escaped. Monitored PSA monthly over next 18 months and kept increasing, rising to 8.8 at which time I was started on Hormone Injections (Started 8 weeks ago). Just had PSA reading and down to 0.24 so feeling a bit relieved to say the least. Doctor did not want to start radiation as well as not sure where in the body cells were and have other health issues as well. Tell Dad to get PSA read monthly not Qrtly and ask for treatment if get to reading of 10 (This is UK based). Good luck (PS - i am 65 years old).

Andrew227er so glad to hear your PSA readings have dropped down. Thats a great recommendation about getting PSA read monthly and not quarterly-hopefully thats an option for us.  Did you make any lifestyle changes after surgery? My Dads 55 years old and I've talked to him about giving up meat.

In the UK, I just get my local Doctor/Nurse (not hospital) to do the monthly PSA test and they give me the result the next day. I then present the results to the Oncologist. Sometimes you have to be pro-active and not wait for the "specialists" to make a move.
