Post surgery exercise

Posted , 9 users are following.

i wasn't given any exercises to do when I was discharged from my fast track op. I passed the test for climbing the stairs and I can walk with crutches and my wife is 'carer'. What post op exercise have you been given? I was very impressed that my consultant gave me his personal mobile number in case I needed help and was unable to get through. Would not use it unless an emergency though, hopefully never.

    Hi Tony

Try a Google search for post hip operation exercises. I found a few good results from reputable hospitals, one that you could download as a pdf.

It is important particularly in the early days when you are less mobile to keep feet, legs, thighs etc exercised & moving to help reduce DVT risk.

    Good luck.

    Dear Tony,

    Greetings from Exeter, England!

I'd say the yes, google searches can be good, but does the hospital physio have a list/book of exercises you somehow were not given? Seems like that normally happens....

keep doing a few stairs a day: up and down, my bedroom is on Level 3, so I got quickly into this! and does your phone have a step counter...500 steps aday might be a gentle but good start....slow but sure...crutches yes, then no: wife putting on your soxyes -  then one day, you'll put your own on!

    Kwwp on trecking!

    Cheers

Once you have got a bit stronger I think the clam is an excellent exercise and benefits knee and hip muscles particularly the abductors

I wished I'd been shown the clam exercises when i had my hip op because when I started running again my hip muscles were weak.

The only criticism I have with wrightington hospital was the lack of after care.

By the time I got a physio appointment I road there on my push bike.

No pincers and no animals were injured during the stretches

There is a good app you can download, pocket physio, designed by someone within the NHS. Otherwise Google as had already been said

    good luck

    Hi Tony

I wasn't given any excercises either. Just taught how to use the crutches to get up and down stairs. Some of the ladies who were in hospital with me and had had hips done before, said you weren't given exercises for hips, just knees. Apparently walking is all the exercise you need.

    Hi Tony,

What is your wife's name ? She seems wonderful and caring .. well, she probably is ...

I agree with others about downloading post op exercises and also watch some on you tube -

I think that you might be familiar with many exercises, you just have to do them slllloooooooowwwww motion ...

Have your wife watch your posture when you do the exercises ...

I live alone and boy, I was in for a surprise when I went to outpatient physical therapy -

big warm hug and be patient ....

Clam exercise - can someone cut n paste this - never heard of it before!

hope Tony you've got some ideas from this forum, starting with walking and floor or bed exercises, and swimming when it seems right.

all of us heal differently - do give it a good go, push alittle, and then rest a lot!

      Hi mic

I am not clever enough to cut n paste so here goes

Lie on your side with knees bent.

Raise the top knee up and down so the legs open up like a clam shell opening hence the name CLAM

      Close the jnees together again.

The weaker side/leg/hip should be uppermost

You could turn over and practise the other side as well

I learned this exercise at physio long before they diagnosed that I needed hip replacement

They said if I did this one enough times I would get bettermad

      (They lied)

Clam exercise - yes one of the best. It has been a real nightmare for me. It really strengthens you up and stabilises your hip joint. On of the first the nurses and physio's got me to try in the hospital. I have not been able to move my knee off the other one for months, or open the clam, but the physio said I just have to keep trying and it will come, she was right it did eventually, and now being able to do it seems to have made a differnce to how my hip feels in general.
