Post surgery pain

10 days ago i had outpatient surgery; since that time i have been in constant pain (from the surgery). however, i am unable to take pain meds, even tylenol due to my intolerances. because of the constant pain, im weak, a little nauseated (due to the pain, i suspect) and very inactive. the post surgical pain may last a few more weeks, doc says.
surprisingly my pmr pain doesnt seem to be ramping up--that is, i dont have the usual telltale signs of a flare, which ive had in the past: groin pain, upper thigh pain, bone crushing fatigue, etc. im weak and sore all over but im thinking that is from being so chairbound. do you all think i should up my pred for a little while, at least until the surgical pain starts to subside? it seems to be taking quite a toll on my already beatup pmr body. im at 6 mg. pred, have had pmr since sept. 2016. i know stress is hard on the pmr body, im stressed. thank you.

Twopies, so sorry to hear of your discomfort. My belief is that surgery takes more out of us than we realize beforehand, and PMR sufferers are especially susceptible to needing a longer recovery time. Even after my minor cataract surgery I needed extra weeks to recover, much more than most people. Thanks to this forum I found some patience. Do be patient. If I were you I would up my dose slightly but I think others will have more expert suggestions.

im thinking the same thing, thanks for your nice reply. just not functioning too well. i keep reading posts that when pmr people are under stress of any kind, their pmr ramps up. as i stated in my post, im pretty darn stressed.

hi Twopies, so sorry to hear you're not feeling well.
It seems (with me, anyway), if it ain't one thing, it's another😕.
like the other's, I'm not a doctor, nor an expert. but if it were me, I think I'd up the dose maybe 4-5mg for about 10da.
then you can re-access.
you'll still be at a relatively low dosage, and it might make a great difference in how you feel!
wishing you lots of❤ and luck!

thank you so much! sometimes it seems like we all are in the same sinking boat--2 steps forward, 3 back...you know the drill better than anybody. im defo thinking that upping the pred is the way to go. ive read posts where pmr patients are advised to up their dose because a family member has surgery which is stressful for them. and stress whacks pmr.
its odd--before the surgery, i asked the anesthesiologist whether i should up my pred the day of the surgery. he said no because he would give me steroids during the procedure. when i woke up, i swear i felt better than i had felt in ages. he must have given me a lot! anyway, feeling good wore off the next day and the pain set in. felt rotten ever since.

amathesiologist told me he was giving me same stuff that you will be getting. when my hubbie comes out of anasthesia from colonoscopy, he is groggy. i was not. maybe because im already on pred?

I expect your body gave three hearty cheers when your surgeon gave you a boost and maybe it's now sulking at having to make do with your routine dose.
I think I agree with Lynda but, of course, like her I'm not medically qualified.

Worth trying at least - after all, your adrenal function must be compromised and both the op and the post-op pain will be stressors that would normally qualify for a bit more pred.
Hope the pain eases soon - the trouble is your body may not notice it is improving because it is expecting there to be pain.

i did up the pred last night to 9 mg., am taking 10 for the next few days to see if things settle down. rough night last night, little sleep. my body expects pain? actually pre-op i didnt, was thinking easy breezy. boy, was i wrong!

Not before - now it has learned that pain was the result of the procedure. Is it unusual for this procedure to be painful? Though any wound is painful, especially when they catch nerves.
