Post TLH Bowel Issues...Shy Poop? Bowel On Strike?
Posted , 6 users are following.
I had my total laparoscopic hysterectomy 8 days ago, my water works are working as they should but my bowels are apparently on some sort of strike or my poop is shy or something. I have cut my pain relief right down so I'm just taking the bare minimum when I feel it's absolutely necessary, I'm also taking senna laxatives before bed, lactulose with every meal and fybogel. My bowels have threatened to open twice but after sitting on the throne for what feels like forever with my feet up on a hopup...nothing!
I eat healthily (apart from the entire sharing bag of mini fig rolls I inhaled yesterday in an effort to get things going) and drink plenty of water...I've been having a strong coffee in the mornings which used to almost guarantee a dash to the toilet but that's not working either. Does anybody else have or has anybody had this issue? I'm pretty desperate and I'm rapidly becoming obsessed.

Hi,
I tend to find that prune juice is best for getting me going when coffee doesn't work.
I've just had a sub total abdominal hysterectomy (on Tues), now home and waiting for my bowel to wake up!! Not looking forward to it...problem is I haven't eaten much as I haven't got any appetite.
Good luck x

I tried warm prune juice but they're still refusing to play nicely. The lack of appetite is frustrating isn't it!? Do you feel nauseous too? I pretty much force fed myself a sharing bag of mini fig rolls for the greater good over the course of the whole day and felt awful for it. I'm just so desperate at this point. I NEED to go, I just can't.
Hope you feel much better very soon! X

Ooh, I actually have some bisacodyl suppositories in my medicine cabinet. I have a bottle of castor oil I'm tempted to down at this point. To be fair, I'm the same...my bowels have always had a mind of their own and I also have a lot of bowel adhesions so I should be used to it by now. I'm just so aware of the need to go.
In for a penny, in for a pound...I'm off to the medicine cabinet! Thank you! X

Why don't you try flapjacks as they work for me it's the oats that do it

I love flapjacks so I was more than happy to try this out. It hasn't worked for me but I may not tell my other half that so he will go and get me some more. Worth another try 😊

Are the sachets fybogel? That's one of the things I'm already prescribed. I've been having them since 2014 but they're not helping. I'll keep trying this weekend and then I will go and see the doctor or my consultant Monday if nothing changes. It's so frustrating!

Any joy Josy?! Hope so....
I managed to eat more yest so am hoping my bowels might wake up a bit😬Plenty of wind going on which is horrid, never experienced pain like it!
I think I'll start on a mission today with prune juice, coffee etc and see how I get on, plus senokot. I can't use dulcolax as I had the most horrific tummy cramps on it once.....
Hope you've had some relief!!

I definitely don't recommend bisacodyl suppositories for anyone else that has this problem...it gave me the most horrendous cramps! Today I've tried senna, flapjacks, fybogel, what seems like an entire field worth of fresh fruit and the creme de la creme for any constipation sufferer...warm prune juice with a dose of lactulose in which I find pretty grim but I'm definitely passing more of the gas since I drank it. No BM yet but I guess I will just try again tomorrow, I'm going to try to drink more warm prune juice with lactulose.
My other half is insisting we go to hospital if nothing happens this weekend. Praying for a BM.

Hi. I don't know what bisacodyl is but when I use glycerine suppositories I don't get cramping. You really sound like you're compact and eating the fruit etc isn't going to sort that out. You may even need to go to gp and be prescribed an enema. I really feel your pain as I was like that after my op. I went 7 days after op with no bm and went back to hospital to have my catheter removed and he got the nurse to give me an enema and it worked a treat. X

Hooray! It's finally happened! This morning my other half made me warm prune juice with lactulose and a cup of strong coffee which finally did the trick. (TMI alert) I only managed a little and have had some bleeding from my bottom. I'm still not feeling like I've cleared out fully but it's a huge relief already!

If fybrogel makes you bloated, stop taking that. (Gastroenterologist advised me of same). Ask your gp for some movicol sachets-also called other names..my gp told me to make up approx 8 sachets worth in a jug and sip continually thru day till I started going...def worked but was painful from impaction so would try those suppositories first.
