Post total knee replacement I had my right knee replacement April 17. I awake with moderate knee pain.  After riding stationary bike for 10-12 minutes pain increases until I take pain meds. Is this what to expect.?

Thanks

Yes. How about riding the bike every other day and then icing and elevating. It took me a good six months before my knee didn’t swell after riding the bike.  I know it’s frustrating. Good luck and hang in there —-it will get better.

Have you got the height of the bike correct for you; I had this, altered saddle height so knee wasn’t so bent and was much better. Hope this helps.

Have you tried pedalling backwards instead and taking pain meds 30 mins before you start plus ice and elevate after ASAP?

Four months will usually put you out of the max pain time zone.  Have you done all of your PT to get your 0 / +120 ROM back???  That should have been completed in the first 12 weeks.  If you need more help with that, read this...

If you have the ROM, it's time to start rebuilding your dead quads, glutes and core.  This will take up another six months because you do it gradually...

Understand that there is no "normal" or "usual" on an personal basis.  The terms only apply in general to the entire population of TKR patients.  Everyone has their own, singular experience.  For ALL of us, push the knee too far on any given day and it will swell...period.  That's why it's important to track your STEPS, not time or distance.  Bike is a good warm-up...then you need the endurance work leading to the strength work.

All of this will get you to walk correctly again, regain your balance and be able to do stairs like you used to.  It takes time, work and patience.  Most people report "feeling more like myself" around nine months and pretty much done by one year.  Residual stiffness, tightness, knee noises, etc. can last another six months.  The nerve sensation when you kneel on a hard surface decreases over a longer time span but may never fully resolve.

    Good luck...
