Post TURP Aftercare

Hi,

Has anyone had TURP on the NHS and needed aftercare? I'm 68 and scheduled for a TURP op but, as I live on my own and also have COPD, I'm worried that I won't be able to look after myself after the operation . I have no-one to help me back from hospital or help me round the house when I get back home. I might not even be able to go shopping as I gather I will be encouraged not to do any lifting for a while. Does the NHS provide assistance in this sort of case?

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. I have tried to get HoLEP but it's not available at my local hospital, the Lister at Stevenage, Hertfordshire. My urologist said he would discuss referring me to Luton & Dunstable Hospital for HoLEP but that was over three months ago. My urologist was not present at my last appointment (it's a lottery who you see at the Lister) but the urologist I saw told me HoLEP was reserved for patients with prostates over 100gm and I didn't qualify despite my other health issues. I'll take it up with my GP anyway. My main concern is that even with HoLEP I may not be able to cope on my own.

As far as im aware you should have a district nurse help you out . . However , you will be evaluated after your op so please exaggerate your need for home help or i guarantee you wont get any. i think its only 5-6 weeks at best . Make them know you live alone . The NHS is in an awful state , ive had a gut full of it recently. Usually great care when you are in the hospital and then appalling once you are out .

They make up the rules as they go along. Rules and reservations are made to be broken. Get on to your MP.

I am sorry my friend. It is go for small and large prostate. You have to put your foot down. With your other problem tell them this is what you want. It would be a lot easier for you to cope with a Holep procedure. Do what you can. I would fight to the death before I would put my body through a Turp.

      Good luck.................Ken

I've had two anaesthetic checks so far (April and November this year) but I haven't had a pre-op yet so I'm hoping to raise there issues at the pre-op.

I don't know about you but to me this is wrong. What it this you don't qualify. With your health issues you should be able to have the treatment that you want and the easiest for you. Turp is not a easy procedure there is a lot of bleeding and a long recovery time.

Im sorry but you need to put your foot done. You are the patient and you need to ask for the referral again. Do not have the Turp Say no. This is your life not the doctors.

I agree with Ken that Turp is an option of last resort . There are many new less invasive procedures available now but not many are available in EVERY uk hospital ., so you may not be offered something that would suit you with less recovery time etc .

Do your research on the internet for BPH procedures and if you find something that is less invasive with less complications and shorter recovery time, ask your urologist firstly if its suitable for you and secondly if your local hospital offers it on the NHS. If you are fortunate to be financially secure you can go private and have every procedure available and done within a week providing it is suitable for your diagnosis .

    Hi Grunthos.

I recently had a turp on the NHS.

You will need transport back from the hospital. You shouldn't drive or strain yourself or be far from a loo, but you will be able to get around and cope with normal living tasks. You can walk around and lift light things and cook etc. You can stock up with things you know you will need before you go in but I do think that you need to know there is someone you can get assistance from if you need it, particularly in the first couple of weeks. I think you should ask the hospital or your consultant this question. It must be a situation which occurs frequently.

I will say that although I did take things easy for about 10 weeks, the operation caused me almost no suffering and resulted in a massive improvement in my quality of life.

    Hey buddy

Have you figured anything out yet. Did you go see another doctor for a second opinion to see if you could have something else done. I don't think your at the last resort stage.

Or did you find someone to help you out. Please see another doctor. I just want the best for you. I hate to see anyone by there self.

    Good luck..........Ken
