Post Turp Urination Issue

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I had a TURP last Monday and all went well. I went in to the urologist's office on Wedndesday for catheter removal. It took time to be able to produce drips, then, the drips increased to small spurts, which was adequate for me to "pass." I urintated several times thereafter. Each time the stream was better. The last or next to last before going to bed at 10:00 PM was almost normal.  By 3:30 AM Thursday morning I needed to urinate or pee, but, try as I could, without any straining, I had no positive result. True to my surgeon's instructions I went to the ER where they re-installed a catheter. I see the surgeon's nurse on Monday for removal of the catheter. Needless to say I am a little anxious about what things will be like on this go around. Has anyone experienced a situation. similar to mine? I don't understand why I went from being able to urinate to not being able to urinate at all. If anyone has had a similar experience I would love to learn about it. Thanks.

I had a very similar experience after my TURP. After four days the catheter was removed and all seemed fine for about 6 hours then the stream started to weaken until I couldn't go at all and wound up in the ER. They put in a new cath for four more days and then everything was fine after that.

Another thing for me is my dr said you can go off all flomax but I still take it until I can mentally get over the fact I might lock up again An go to the emergency room to be cathed! He laughed in my last ck up An said go ahead if u like, but stop the vitimans fir enlargement wast of money I said ok. Another thing I must get used to is I di no have to owe as often an I sometimes think when I don't go for a few hrs not every 45 min that something is wrong, I guess I will just have to get over it as I when full can stand back five feet An hit the John now he said as I heal that may reduce some

I had Greenlight Laser TURP done on May 19th of this year.  I experienced similar problems.  I could urinate when the catheter was removed, but not the greatest.  I especially had problems at night (and continue to do so).  In any case, the first time I plugged up was after about 10 days after the surgery, on a Sunday (of course).  Had to go the ER and after a couple of hours of waiting (in pain) they reinstalled the catheter.  A week later my urologist removed it and I could urinate again.  However, later that evening, around 9pm, I plugged up again.  Back to the ER, and another foley catheter.  After a week the urologist removed it and I could again urinate fine.  But I INSISTED they teach me to self cath, because I felt there was a good chance I would plug up again, and it was causing me a great deal of anxiety.  He complied, and I was sent home with sample catheters.  Urinated fine all day, but I plugged up again around 10pm.  I did a self cath and after that I was fine for another 24 hours.  The pattern repeated for about 6 days, and after that I was flowing pretty good, just not very fast at night.  For the last 4 weeks I have been doing a self cath about once a week, at night, when I feel the flow has slowed down enough where it might cause a problem.

While I am dissapointed I need to self cath once a week, I am hoping it is just part of the healing proccess.  My Urologist had told me that he felt it was going to take me a full 6-9 months to FULLY recover from the procedure.  Some of his patients heal in a shorter period, some take longer.  My flow, for the most part, is very good, and this is without the help of any alpha blockers, which I stopped taking about 30 days ago.

I would advise ANYONE who is going to have any kind of a TURP (conventional, laser, whatever) procedure ask their Urologist to teach them how to self cath BEFORE the procedure in case you need to do so after.  Going to the ER in pain because you are unable to urinate is no fun, not to mention to costs involved.  And believe me, it will always happen when your Urologist's office is closed, like on a weekend or late a night.   If you have the option to self cath you can take care of the problem in the comfort of your own home.

I have been through it all and before the Turp when I locked up after my urologist asked me would I feel better if he showed me how to self cath this is after having a bag on my leg for a

Month wow you want me to stick that in now I did and before I had surgery locked up again and stuck it in me then chicken

Out then tried to pee no good then forced it in blood started to come

Out and some pee went to er they could barely cathe but was there 14 hrs sent home after drinking 5 gallons of water with cath went to dr 2 days later he said u ready to fix this? Yes! I still fear cathing and keep thinking after 40 days from surgery I will not be able

To pee? I guess this mental shi will take some time to get over as it has been a friggin nitemare all brought on by me for dragging my darn feet to the dr

The anxiety caused by the fear of not being able to pee is the primary reason why I insisted on being allowed to self cath.  It's not exactly the most pleasant experience, but once I had done it a few times it's not a problem for me.  I think it depends a lot on the individual and their anatomy.  I am lucky, I don't seem to have any difficulty doing the self cath, and I use a regular FR16 catheter with lube.  I have read others, due to various issues, have difficulty inserting the catheter, even the smaller ones.  You just have to experiment, and work with your Urologist to find the combination of equipment and technique that works for you.

Hi Neighbor confused.  I'm in Dinuba.  My Urologist is Dr. Prah in Visalia.  Had my Greenlight done at Kaweah Delta Hospital.  Who is your doctor in Fresno?  Dr. Julian maybe?

My prostate is (was) no where as big as yours ... on the other hand I'm only 5' 7" and have a small frame, so if I had a prostate as big as an orange I would have stopped urinating long ago.  My PSA has never been an issue, it has never been higher than 0.9, most of the time it is in the 0.5 to 0.75 range.

Have you tried smaller catheters?  I use a french 16, but I judging by many of the other posts FR12 or FR14 is more common.  I would suppose the more constricted your prostate is the smaller the catheter you have to use to get it to go in without difficulty.  There are also catheters that have a bent tip (called a coude tip) that sometimes makes it easier to pass through troublesome prostates.
