Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 64 and had left posterior hip replacement Saturday 13th January. When I came out of recovery Had  oxygen and saline drip attached also wearing the compression boots, and I did eat.

on Sunday drip oxygen and boots removed. Got up and immediately dizzy and feeling sick was given anti sickness tabs. Same thing happened all day and next morning so morphine knocked off and given codeine still sickly so codeine knocked off now on only paracetamol and warfarin and get odd waves of nausea, sent home yesterday with exercise sheets and told to potter about the house till next week then walk a little outside. Did anyone else experience any of this

HI Mary, sorry to hear you suffered with the dizziness and sickness. I can so relate to this as I had it quite severely with both my hip replacements and it lasted 3 or 4 days both times. They are not sure if the anaesthetic causes it or the pain relief given. I was tried on different pain relief but reacted the same to all of them. It's an awful feeling but I hope you are feeling much better now 😊

    Hi Mary

I had a bad reaction to morphine in hospital so that was withdrawn the day after my op.  I had been taking co-codamol for ages before the op so I had got over to the sicky feeling and continued to take them for some time after.

Did you have sedation or general anaesthetic?  Either way it's a while before it's flushed out of your system so there's probably some of that sloshing around.

Be kind to yourself, you've had a huge and brutal surgery so give yourself some time to get over it.

    Good luck, Cels.

Thanks celsb , I had sedation,  kept hearing a knocking every now and then throughout the operation. Did you do much indoor or outdoor walking during the early days ? I am struggling a bit with the exercises but managing the stairs easily .

Hi Mary, I was incredibly sick after my op. The sick feeling went on for several days and I was off my food for quite a while. I lived on mashed potatoes and ice cream, not at the same time. Apparently if you are sick you should start off with liquids, then white food which can then become yellow etc. I am not sure if it works or not. The plus side of my THR on the other hand was that everything else went well and I have always felt that I still have my real hip.

Thanks Ptolemy, did you continue with medication (I am just taking paracetamol at the moment) if so how long for ?

Hi Mary, in hospital I was given Tramadol and paracetamol although I just took the paracetamol. I had morphine for one day after the op. I carried on a bit with the paracetamol  when I got home although I did not have any pain so I am not sure how much I needed them.

    Hello Mary,

hope you are feeling better.  My THR is Feb 12 but from previous surgeries I can relate.  What made me feel better is those little round soup crackers, no sugar, just salty.  A few of those With a small cup of tea, no milk, really helped the nausea. Also, if you are constipated, that will make you feel nauseated.  Try 2-3 prunes( juice didn’t work as well) or stool softeners or keep thing straight moving.  Lots of water, tea, soup.  Not much dairy. Take care of yourself.
