Postmenopausal Ovarian Cyst. Worried for my Mom.

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to what my Mom is going through at the moment. She is 62, and has gone through menopause over 10 years ago. She gave birth to two children, and from what we know, no history of any sort of cancer in her family. (The women on her side of the family never went to an OBGYN). For years she has had a thick uterine lining. After losing over 70 pounds, that returned to normal on its own. For years she has also had two persisting cysts on her ovaries. One of them resolved on its own, the other did not. For over two years she has been going every 6 months for an internal ultrasound, and the size in the remaining cyst varies. For about a year its size went down, and now it went up slightly. The doctor said the measurement was "mildly elevated." It is 2.4x1.1 cm. On the ultrasound report all that was noted was "septations." To air on the side of caution, the OBGYN referred my Mom to a cancer specialist. She said she does not believe it is cancer, and that the specialist will probably laugh at what he sees, but she wants to be safe. My Mom goes in on Friday, so naturally I will be a wreck until then. CA-125 has been done when cysts were first observed years ago, and were normal. If anyone has any experience in this, any sort of info would be great. Thank you so much, and hope you are all staying safe during COVID.

If the CA-125 is normal then that's good. Does she have PCOS? It seems since she lost weight they shrunk, correct? Not to poo-poo your worries, but 1 or 2 cm is very small compared to most mentioned on here and subsequently operated on (mine was 11 cm). But you did indicate it may have burst or is going to burst. Anyway, I would suggest, along with seeing the doctor of course, that she go on a low carb diet since cysts and PCOS feed off of sugar.

I don't believe that she has PCOS. When she lost weight everything shrunk. In the last six months the size increased to still a very small 2.4 cm. However, she has gained about 15 pounds so she is thinking it has something to do with that. Thanks for responding by the way.

It could very well be that there is a direct correlation between weight loss/gain to the size of the cyst. I gained 30 lbs and that's when my cyst grew. It makes sense if they feed off of sugar.
