Postnatal Depression & Sertraline

Hi there,

I have only been taking Sertraline for 1 day now and am due to take another tonight. I am not sure what I feel at the moment apart from completely drained and tired. I am extremely worried although my GP does advise me that it is perfectly safe as I am still breastfeeding my baby. Does anyone know whether it is likely to affect my baby or not. sad

Hi, I was prescribed Sertaline 50mgs just over 6 weeks ago for PND.I was also breastfeeding.Initially it took 3weeks to work and I had a really good week but then it just seemed to even out.I have since stopped breastfeeding and my dose is now 100mgs.Have only been on 100mgs for 6 days and waiting for it to kick in.Although I did not really want to stop breastfeeding I felt for me and all my family that we all needed me to be firing on all cylinders.I dont think anyone can really say if the drugs would affect baby or not.I think you just have to weigh everything up and if you are feeling much better on a low dose and can still BF then great. But perhaps if things are getting worse you may have to consider increasing meds and reconsider BF.Would love to hear your thoughts as most people on this site seem to take sertraline for depression and not many for PND.Would like to know how you are getting on as I feel sometimes that others dont truly understand how I am feeling.

    Hi

I have been on sertraline on and off for the past 5 years. Initially it was for PND after the birth of my 2nd child - well about a year after. After I had baby number 3 I knew within a couple of weeks that I needed help. There is so much pressure on new mums, demands of a baby, household and friends and family. My youngest is nearly 3 now and I am still taking them. Although I came off them myself for about 6 months - not something I would recommend.

I was BF when I stared taking them and there have been no ill effects in fact I would say he is the easiest of all my kids!!! It isn't a miracle cure and does take time. I found I could cope better with the baby. You probably will still feel a bit tired but that's babies for you. I eventually told close family and friends that I was on medication and their support has been great. It's not a case of 'pull your socks up' if you had a vitamin defiency you would take a supplement for me it's the same thing. Best of luck and congratulations on the birth of your baby.

Hi, I have been put on Sertraline since having my first child and initially was on 50mg but have now been bumped up to 150mg. I am still Breast feeding as I have been advised by my doctor and health visitor and various other professionals that it is safe to do so. I didn't want to stop BF as it seems to be the only thing I do right at the mo. My dose may be higher than normal but I have significant previous depression and this has all re entered since the birth of my daughter, But I've beaten it once so I hope to do the same again. Good luck and remember you are not alone in any of this.
