Pre Hysterectomy, to keep cervix or remove

Hi there, I'm 47 with a 26 yr old daughter. I'm due to have my hysterectomy this Thursday 2nd June. During to enlarged uterus, fybroides and thickening to the lining of my womb. All non cancerous. But due to painful heavy periods and the above I'm having a hysterectomy. My consultant asked if I wanted to keep my cervix, i said I wasn't sure, what did he think best. He said its upto me. So I would be grateful if any1 could help.

I have a very fun loving sex life with my partner and I don't want having it removed to affect this, and vice versa.

Many thanks in advance

I am so pleased you are OK and on the mend.  My view on removal of cervix and love life is that it appears some women are fine and some of us are not.  I personally have not had an orgasm since hysterectomy and removal of cervix.  As we don't know as yet why this is the case, any woman having the choice of keeping the cervix is best doing so.  It might not be the cerviix  - keeping it or not that's the problem.  It could be severed nerves, removal of the uterus, anterior repair like I had.  One thing I do know is that it's not all in my mind.  It seems to be a lottery whether you'll be OK or not

I had my cervix removed when I had a hysterectomy (total hysterectomy) in 1990, I wasn't asked if I only wanted a partial hysterectomy but I assume as I was working in gynae my consultant thought I would understand the pros and cons. My sex life improved and it's still wonderful now but it is something to consider and I also discussed it with patients if the gynaecologist hadn't. Assassa it's definitely not in your mind and I would hope a health professional didn't say it was.

Yes Catherine there are many insensitive doctors or there! ! Mine told me I'm fine, that there is no reason for all the pain, and none of his other patients have my issues. I'm not imaging this pain its surreal. 😢

Hi Matron, may I ask how long after susurgery that you were able to enjoy sex again?

It was a long time ago but I think it was around 7 weeks because I can remember my gynaecologist asking me if we'd had sex when I had my post op check and that was about 8 weeks.
