pre-op appointment. What happens?

Posted , 10 users are following.

I've just realised I have pre-op appointment tomorrow at 9.00 am, my op is on 8th June. What happens at this appointment? I told work I'd be a bit late and have arranged for someone to take kids to school but just realised I have no idea what they'll be doing. Any advice would he good. X

Hi, I am surprised the surgeon didn't explain it to you.  It will take a couple of hours as they test your blood pressure, heart, urine, height, etc. then you have to go for a blood test, just to make sure you are healthy enough for the operation.  Good Luck Valerie

Hi Valerie it is a thorough medical. Questionnaires to fill in. Good idea to write/type all medication, dose and how often. The space they allow for this is minimal. The nurse was so happy to see mine as she just stapled in to the notes. Make a note of any operations and hospital apps to date. They need to know about allergies. Swabs are taken from nose and groin to eliminate MRSA

Take any questions you have as the nurses can answer most things. They should tell you what usual meds you can take on the day of your op. If you are on an enhanced recovery programme you should be issued with the drinks to take the day before and morning of op. Me week 8+ and progressing well

Thanks. No, got a letter to tell me when op was and pre-op, and included information all about my KNEE operation. Quickly rang them to put them right. Got a new letter and have had no other contact. Sure it'll be all OK.

    Hi Karen.

You will basically get a full MOT to make sure you do not have any type of infection or medicle reason not to go ahead with your op. Urine and blood tests ECG of your heart. Blood preasure any health issues. You need to take any medicines you are taking with you to show the nurse. Medicle history, Past operations and anything else you may want to tell them or theuy=y need to know.

I had blood tests, blood pressure taken, urine tests, weight and height taken and BMI, ECG, a chat with the Nurse, then an x-ray and measurements to see what size replacement was needed.  It all took just under 2 hours.  Good luck with yours and also with the op.

Tales 2-4 hours. I had blood tests for he levels and electrolytes to ensure you are basically Ok. EGG, height and weight checked, urine tested and swabs taken to see if you are an MRSA carrier. They will then arrange for treatment of anything found so you are tip top for the op. I filled in the consent form, any medications currently checked, past medical history Checked .Good idea to write it all down, including any previous anaesthetics. Was talked through procedure on op day and any questions were answered. Finally I had an X-ray so the calculations could be done for length of implant etc.

Hi Karen - I am in Holland, so I think it is diferent out here ..I had to fill out a a big questionnaire earlier as well as all the other tests - and was given additional forms to fill out at home -

I received an invitation in the mail  for an informational afternoon - entailed

evaluation of medication by the pharmacist in the hospital - Had to bring all my meds, including the herbal ones - based on that they wrote down what I could contiinue to take, which ones to discontinue etc.  Then I saw the anesthesiologist whom I told I wanted general anesthesia - she explained a lot and answered all my questions ...respected my request for GA --- ater that I had to go to the transit office where they will set up post op care - I live alone so needed to have Home care and such ... then another office to complete the forms .... but it was not over yet !!  There was a 2 hours presentation scheduled about THR and TKR - with pictures !!!! also a Physical Therapist talked about what to expect - thourough explanation although it went right over my head at that time - what did I know, right ?    it was a full 5 hours of fun and tremendous fear as they hammered all the DO NOT's every other sentence ....

Unfortunately I had not found this forum yet and was ill prepared ...

I will be 9 weeks post op tomorrow .... let us know how you are getting on ....

    big hug

Hi. Your set up sounds very organised. I still don't feel I know anything even though only 3 weeks until op. Hopefully I'll feel a bit better informed after tomorrow.

It could take 3 hours and I don't know if it varies from region to region or if you are young or old. I'm 62. I saw the occupational therapist who organised equipment for me and discussed after care. I saw one of the doctors on the team who took a medical history and checked my neck and foot pulse, asked about allergies. I saw a nurse - had blood samples, 2 swabs for mrsa, electrocardiogram, blood pressure, urine sample, allergy check again. I saw another nurse who went through allergies again and a few more questions and gave me antibiotic nose cream and antibiotic wash liquid to use before the op for a certain number of days and while I was in hospital. These were all in a patient medication bag. I also saw the surgeon who went through the type of hip replacement, possible complications and then had to sign the consent form. Make sure you take any existing medication - they will want to know what it is! You have to stop certain medicines a certain length of time before the op for example ibuprofen several days before. They also gave me a lot of leaflets with information about the hospital,  infection control, exercises, general information about hip replacement etc. I didn't see the anaesthetist till the day of the op.
