Pre Op Question

Morning all, Just joined up. What a great find!!

I will be going in for a RTHR on January 21st (very excited). I am trying to prepare as much as I can and have researched on the web. However, I am perplexed as to which side of the bed I should be getting in/out (stupid - right). Also, I have been recomended a ceramic hip due to my age. If you recommend anything else I can do to prepare, I would very much appreciate any and all thoughts/comments.

I had the spinal with sedation.  I was asleep during the entire thing and did not hear, feel or smell anything.  I was woken up and told they were just putting the dressing on.  I did not go back to sleep and stayed awake while I was in recovery then put on the ward.  My neighbour who had the full anesthetic slept for 10 hours after.

Oh, that's interesting to know. Mind you, 10 hours of sleep sound wonderful. Last time I had that was when I was a teenager :-)

Hello Hogtog and welcome to the forum,

Like you I'm pro-op but have no date yet.  Just waiting for pre-op assessment. Everyone here knows more than me so I won't offer advice, in fact I'll probably be seeking it from you when my times comes.

This forum is fab and everyone is lovely.  Great place to come for advice, a rant znd we can all learn from each other.

    Good luck for 21st xxx

I had RTHR April 2nd. I found it easier to get into bed on my unoperated side. It was just a little easier to lift my operated leg up and over.

Also If you have cats, you may want to get a long handled scooper.

A sock aid is great for putting your socks on.

Have a nice comfy chair or recliner that isn't too soft and try to teach yourself to get up and down with little effort as possible.

Also I had and still have a seat riser for the toilet and I still use it just because my toilet is so low and it just doesn't feel comfortable for me.

When I first came out of the hospital after 3 nights I was on a walker for about 4 weeks then started to wean off onto a cane. I still use a cane today if walking a long distance.

I wish you the best of luck!

I found no difference either way - just hold the ankles together so the good leg supports the weak one, and do a high jump  style 'fosbury flop' landing on your back, and the legs magically spring up with you, and there you are !
