Pre THR lower leg pain?

Hi i'm new on here, wanted to ask if anyone else had lower leg pain with total femoral head collapse? i've just a fortnight ago been told thats what has happened in right hip, waiting now for pre op appt, i have terrible knee pain, i understand this is normal, but the pain i have in lower leg & ankle is quite severe and can't weight bear, is this normal? I thought my pain was due to back problems so quite shocked by this diagnosis. I am 54 and now pretty nervous of upcoming surgery.

Pain from the hip can be referred into the knee as you are already aware but it can also cause pain in the shin and ankle, a lot of the time it can be because of the way we walk.
So is it avascular necrosis you have been diagnosed with and if so you will be having a full hip replacement I presume.
Try not to worry, their is loads of peeps on here who will guide you with information and support.

Hi, consultant didn't say much apart from the AVN but doesn't know why? GP kept telling me my pain was from my back and l4 nerve root(which does cause me problems but obviously not this now i've seen consultant) it's all happened so quick, think i'm still taking it in, everyone on here seems very nice and helpful, thank you 😃

Yes a great site for support and information, their are a couple of things they can try for AVN but it's going to be a HR in the end and as Deborah says it will be a faster fix if you follow the recovery rules and don't try to rush it

Hello Sonja. While my situation is I'm 3.5 months post LTHR revision and recovery has been slower that hoped for, I have been pain free since 3 weeks post op. My brother-in-law, though, was diagnosed with AVN several years after a traumatic fall from a scaffold. He was 49 when he had his hip replaced and did fantastic afterward. His pain too was all over but resolved after surgery on the hip. Ten years later his hip is good. Take it slow and easy. Follow your post op instructions and don't try to rush your recovery. Everyone heals at different paces. Keep us posted on your progress. Prayers for good results.
Regards, Deborah

Hi Deborah1227 sorry to hear you have had a slow recovery, hopefully you will now continue to go from strength to strength, your poor brother, glad he did well. I have had bad pain for two years ish with what I thought was back as I have back problems, my doctor said the same, I had to push for an xray as doctor kept saying wear & tear, and took no notice, the cracking sounds are horrendous, so went for xray last month, two weeks later got result, telephone consult with GP led to urgent referal two weeks later, consultant didn't seem concerned about any avn he doesn't know why I have the necrosis that caused the collapse, it looked bad on xray, he said there isn't really a choice, I can't go on like this, the pain in lower leg is so severe too, that and I can't do anything, so I'm waiting everyday now for postie to bring my pre op letter, been two weeks since I was put on 'urgent' list, I am taking lots of extra vitamins and iron too.
Regards Sonya 😃

my knee pain was worst then hip pain before surgery. I am now three weeks post and walking two miles a day with trekking poles only and no knee or hip pain!

I was adamant something was wrong with my knee lol, amazing how these things affect your body, my shin and ankle are so so painful, I am hoping I don't have to wait too long for surgery, two miles a day, wow that's fantastic, I do hope I have the good results post op that others have had, keep up the good work 😃

Hi Sonya, I'm 10 days post THR after a late dx of AVN. My GP gave me grief too, telling me is was just mild-mod OA. Only when I could barely walk she decided on another xray. Once she had the results I had her read them to me. She mentioned flattening of the femoral head (not total collapse) but never used the words avascular necrosis. (I'm rolling my eyes here.) It was the first thing the surgeon said and he actually apologized to me for it not be dx'd sooner.
Prior to the THR my knee pain was pretty bad (I had to wear a brace daily for the last 8 months) and it would go into the lower leg too. The THR will be life changing. I have no real pain now just a bit of discomfort. Every day I notice a slight improvement. 😃

I feel for you, no one can see your pain can they, I had 'coerce' a doctor into giving me an xray, consultant didn't realy seem concerned about avn jus lets get a thr, he has no idea why I have any necrosis, glad to hear your recovery is going well, take care 😃
