Prednisolone for flare up

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi I have just had a short stay in hospital for a flare, had my ct scan today and showed a number of things like bowel wall thickening and fatty infiltratration of the liver, they have given me prednisolone 30mg I know it's a steroid, I'm worried about side effects inc weight gain, have any of you had any issues? How long do you usually take it for?

    Hi Clare,

Try not to stress the pred steroid will really help, you will feel so much better very quickly. Its likely you will put on some weight, as you will be hungry from all of the activity the pred will give you the energy for.

Just try to fill up on healthy choices ( given any diet restrictions you may be under) . Any residual weight will quickly be lost when you finish the pred, but still have the higher energy for some time.

In case doctor hasn't told you its best to take a calcium supplement while on pred ask your chemist for recommendation. Its cheaper over the counter than on prescription in UK.

Enjoy your buzz, and remember the inflammation will really reduce and you may get a long term benefit from a shortish course.

    Good luck

Ah thanks Sharon, ooh does it give you a buzz, thought I felt a bit giddy earlier! I'll try to keep good food wise!

I'm very overweight as it is and was starting my diet for my hols in may, better to feel well I suppose 🙂

I have been on Prednisone for 10 years now and it has helped me stay functional. It works fast and you should feel better soon. Don't worry about the side effects, most likely you won't be on it long.
