Prednisone dose change due to allergy

Having been sick for two weeks I finally went to the doctor. The PA that I saw took an X-Ray and listened to my chest and after talking with me determined that my cold probably ended a while ago and I am now suffering from allergies and may have to wait it out. I told her there was no way I could wait this out since simply going to the bathroom caused me to be out of breath. I agree that it is probably allergies but she had to do something, so she put me on 50 mg of prednisone for 3 days then 30 mg for 3 days then finally down to my original 10 mg. But she said she didn't want me to do that until I got the ok from my rheumatologist. Well she ok'd it so tomorrow I begin taking 50 mg of prednisone. Here's my question well more like a concern. I've never taken that much before. At 20 mg my heart would race so I'm not looking forward to this but whatever will help make me feel better. I'm guessing I'll be hungry, but what else? And I'm only looking at a total of 6 days so surely I can get through 6 days.

Well if it was me I'd be peeing all the time. Sleeping would be hard. I've been put on higher doses before for an ear issue. It was only a short time like you. Lets not to forget I'd be starving. Just watch what you eat, you should be fine. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Peeing all the time? I don't get that. Do you drink more? I'm talking about non-alcoholic beverages. Lol

I started on 60, and felt better immediately. Yes, I had some side effects, sleeplessness, fragile skin, fatter face, but you're only doing 6 days, , I m now, after 8 months on 10, and sleep is better, moon face going, skin still rubbish, but i m sure it'll improve in time.. pres is not nice, so I m not sugar coating it, but it does , and sometimes is the only thing that will make you feel better and cope more... Hope you feel better really soon..x

The reactions to prednisone are all over the place. In my case on three separate occasions I was put on 60 mg and did not experience side effects and it sure made the pain go away.

Yoing what I have been pondering these last few days....I suffer side affects from pred like you, heart racing, dizziness, sweats, etc....but have only taken 15mg maximum....my useless rheumie says if that dosen`t work then I don`t have PMR....(6 years later) well, I wondered if I went to 20 or 25mg like you short term would that sap it and then drop quickly.......and it would have to be quickly....my body dosen`t like it either!.....

Hopefully Eileen and others  will advise you....and I will take on board what they say also.....

Good luck with what you decide, and keep us posted ..........

It is a common approach these days for stubborn symptoms after a chest infection. You may be hungry - though some people find it takes a while before that kicks in. I'd expect the worst problem to be insomnia. And a desire to conquer the world with housework. And possily bad temper.

Hope it works! OH has just been very breathless - and it isn't uncommon for him after an infection as he has very dodgy lungs, or to be more accurate, one lung . This time though it has been fluid - and INCREASING his diuretic rather than reducing it as his GP said has worked a minor miracle. GP didn't send him for a chest x-ray

Your question to Pam about peeing - pred makes some people pee for the Olympics, and the higher the dose, the worse it is for them.

    This too shall pass...

I started on 40 mg. 20 X day. Down to 20 once a day after 10 days. have some issues, mostly dizzy ! Think I shoul have been ln the 40 longer but hanging in there. Truthfully just to be free of so much pain has been worth any side effects. Hope you see good results.
