Pregnancy and Ulcerative Colitis

Hi,

I am 25 yrs old and I was diagnosed with UC when I was 16. I am currently on 2000mg Pentasa twice daily and 75mg Imuran ( azathioprine) once daily. I haven't had a flare up in over a year. So all is good only now my partner and I would like to try for a baby.

I have discussed this with my consultant and she advised not to come off any medication as a flare up would be worse for the baby than the meds.

The only thing is, I have been looking into the effects of Imuran and it gives awful side effects including miscarriage and fetal disformaties.

I am just looking to see if anyone has any info on what I should do. And if any women out there have taken this medication through pregnancy. Any info at all would be great.

Thank you ☺

I'm not much help on a personal level as I have yet to be pregnant while having this disease but a friend of mine is on Imuran and last year gave birth to two very healthy twin girls. She was also advised it is worse to be off the medication for the baby but I agree the side effects are scary.

I guess it's a personal decision. A very tricky one at that.

I will be also facing this same decision in a few years and it already has me stressing.

Maybe try a second opinion to help ease your mind.

Hi, I have no children either, but do have colitis. if i was in your position, i would talk to your gp, gastroenterologist & obstetritian(? think that is the word for pregnancy specialist!) & then form your own opinion weighing up what all the specialists have said before you start trying to get pregnant. better to be well informed. the last thing you want is for your colitis to flare again, but equally you want a healthy pregnancy/baby. hope this helps. x

Hello, yes getting pregnant while on medication is scary. I have two children and was on a high dose of steroids and masalasine while pregnancy with my daughter. I didn't plan her she was a very great surprise I thought I wasted I'll to be pregnant. My Gastro doc was keen that I didn't stop taking medication while I was pregnant but he did advise I stopped using enemas. I spent nine monthsbeing very worried and had more scans than normal. She is fine and now is 15 but hasasthma and although I can't be certain that it wasn't the drugs I will never know. I breastfed her for a year and I was perfectly well and no symptoms of colitis at all during that time. I would advise you check with your Gastro team to be certain but honestly pregnancy istough on any woman's body, if you can be well and do everything you can to make a healthy baby then go for it. Tell them about yourconverns and get as many checks as you go along. Its tough going but you know being symptoms free is the best way to get pregnant in the first place.

Good luck with whatwyou decide and have a happy new year x

Thank you everyone for your replys, its great to hear from people that know what you are going through.

I have discussed the subject with my consultant and she strongly advises to stay on every medication and isn't to supportive with my worry.

I also spoke to my own GP about it and he also shared my concerns. So now I am stuck in a rut! Has any of you ladies tried alternative therapy? My sister is quiet keen for me to try this route.

    Thanks once again 😊
