Pregnant with possible Kidney Stones?

Ok, I'm a 29 year old female 36 weeks pregnant. Back in January I had a large amount of blood in my urine and some flank pain ( nothing like what most describe with stones) happened again two weeks later so my OB requested a urology work up. I had a full ultrasound which showed mild fluid in my right kidney which is normal in pregnancy. Then sent me off to a urologist for a cystoscopy and two cystologies to look for bladder tumors and Cancer cells. All which were negative. Fast forward to April and again some flank pain with blood in my urine. Urologist wants a CT scan but can't due to pregnancy. So it became a waiting game. May comes along and im having blood every few days with a little more Intense pain lower along my hip and into my pelvis. No back or 'flank' pain per say but now I am urinating large clots and tissue and blood. Went to ths hospital they pumped me full of fluids did an ultrasound and saw absolutley nothing and said probably a kidney stone we'll look closer after you have the baby.... Does any of this sound like a kidney stone? They feel it would be a small one since it can't be seen on ultrasound and I am not in excruciating pain. But I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around a 'small' stone causing so much trouble, blood and clots and taking MONTHS to pass... Any thoughts?

It's hard to be sure what's going on here but you've done the right thing to get yourself tested.

Don't give up on re-advising your doctors of the symptoms or they'll think that you are OK.

I have a history of a bladder tumour which they cut out and when I found blood reapparing some years later, I went for a further cystoscopy.

The cyctoscopy was OK and they did not look at my kidneys so were not aware that a kidney stone was brewing. The doctor who did the cystoscopy told me that the blood was possibly due to rupturing of the fragile blood vessels that line the bladder and that this was nothing to worry about.

I was not passing clots though, like you are so you need to keep pressing your doctor until they get to the bottom of it. The blood that I was passing was only a slight reddening of the urine.

One would have expected a kidney stone to show up on ultrasound. Maybe you have a urine infection?? Perhaps your pregnancy is putting a greater strain on your urinary system (and those fragile blood vessels) and all will settle down once you've had the baby but do get it investigated after the birth.

Good luck and tell us how you get on.

    Hi Tasha

All during my pregnancy with my daughter I had multiple kidney stones. Not all my stones are accompanied with flank pain. As the stone moves further down. With my most recent stone I got blood clots when urinating when it was stuck in my bladder but I suppose it's different with everyone. The stones I had when pregnant were also less painful than they normally are. The doctors said that this is because when your body relaxes itself and makes room for the baby this also affects your waterworks! I found it easier to pass stones when pregnant so if you do have one just keep drinking plenty of water. Also an important thing to note is that when I first started complaining about pain they did an ultrasound and said there were no stones. 3 weeks later I passed 5 of them! So stones don't always show up on an ultrasound!!
