I've been recommended to start alendronic acid tabs, having read the patient information sheet I have decided to decline at this time, my dexa scan is showing mild changes at this time, any advice ?

I think you are right. If you take calcium supplement, vit D and K2 , you should be fine. This is what I do ( and many others). When I asked my Dr it I should reduce calcium now that I am below 2mg, he said " let's do another dexa scan and see"... Will have one at July17th.

It would be helpful to know your t-scores from the dexascan.
My original t-scores were clustered just below -1.1, very slightly below what is classed as normal but still termed osteopenia. After over 7 years on pred and only taking calcium and vit D the t-scores were all better than -1.5, Still perfect;y acceptable. I had been told to take alendronic acid, I took 4 before having done my research and discussing it with a different GP. He agreed with me, better to stop and see what happened on just calcium and vit D. I would have been taking the AA for nothing.

Nick's advice is spot on. I would add that if you aren't already you should make sure to do some good weigh bearing exercise daily if possible (like a good walk in the open air). If you are really concerned or your doctor starts to pressure you have a look at my account of my early days after being told to take AA (I didn't). Just google healthunlocked my osteoporosis journey.

Thank you so much for the advice, it means more coming from patients who have experienced this , I was diagnosed with pmr 18 months ago, my gp retired just before I had time to see course through so I weaned myself off prednisolone, 2 months later had flare up so had to return to gp, she said start again, should be on them for approximately 2 yrs

i was prescribed alendronic acid two years ago i have been taken it once a week.after reading your what has been written i am now scared to take it. I went into a health shop today and asked what strength i should take, the lady said she could not recommend. Could someone please tell me what strength i should take, i do take calcium tablets. I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in me knees. What are the side affects of alendronic acid?
Thank you in advance.

I started this discussion recently when my gp highly recommended that I started A Acid, I reluctantly agreed, but when I read the patient information leaflet and further details on Google, i was very put off, my dexa scan showed slight deterioration of bone loss but nothing else more, I have taken the decision to leave the AA alone for now and on the advice of the other guys in this conversation I went out and bought some calcium chewable tablets, that's my choice, I would suggest you read up and decide yourself what you think you should do
