Prescriptions - Chemists

How about this.

I actually took a prescription in, I (not strictly true), a friend took me for a drive and we called in to collect it just for a change.

Arrived at chemists and lo and behold, Independent gone and Boots taken over.

Handed over prescription and out came Pharmacist:

\"Good Morning Mrs so and so - have you a few minutes?\"

\"Yes\"

\"Come through here please\"

Desk, Computer, two chairs.

My prescriptions up on screen, then went through them, asking how I re-acted, what I felt, blah blah blah.

Two days later, letter arrives, list of all prescribed medicines, how long taking them, re-actions etc and a copy to my GP.

This is a yearly service I gather, but as a longterm user they automatically check the computer when a prescription is issued to ensure - Yes you guessed it - compatibility and also to alert the GP in case repeat prescriptions are being issued without awareness.

Wow.

Is this happening all over?

In support of Boots also they are the only Chemists who have given me advice about taking calcium also that as my husband takes medication for high blood pressure and cholestral he shouldnt take any of the cold medication remedies Havent been asked all these questions yet though but havent used them recently My husband uses a Chemist near his work and this Chemist picked up the fact at about 10am that the tiny cluster of spots on his forehead was shingles and by lunchtime my husbanfd had done a 40 mile round trip to the Drs and was back to collect his prescription for antiviral drugs and with no further developments so he was very lucky also On the Continent people seem to have very long diagnostic chats with the Chemist which doesent seem to occur here

    Hi Mrs K

I had a local independent pharmacist who was second to none when I was confined to bed for all those months suffering from undiagnosed PMR - she was so helpful and reassuring during all my telephone calls to her. Also it was her who a year later helped me to diagnose that I was now suffering from GCA, 3 GPs failing abysmally to do so. Alas, she has now retired but, again in support of Boots, I have since found their service excellent - they take time and trouble to help with their advice and in my 2 years of dealing with them they have never let me down with my prescriptions. Oh, it's good when something works isn't it and we can praise rather than moan!

we have had this system of medication checks for a couple of years now, also i can get my repeat presriptions deliverd on the day i want them, having phoned the surgery first and asked for the list to be sent to the boots chemist next door. very usefull service.

I must be the only one with an absolutely useless Boots. Even the surgery say how bad they are, but they are the only pharmacy in town.

Of the last dozen or so repeats requested only one has been completely correct. In the past few months they have given me the wrong medication (three times) 'haven't got that in stock' countless times, missed one off the list (at least 6 times) and 'we can't find it' (the request) three times.

When they see me coming now, they cower under the counter.

It takes them any time between a week and 10 days to fill in a repeat. I now keep a month of everything in hand!

I wouldn't trust them with medication for my cat and as for the thought of those numpties attempting any kind of check on mine........the mind boggles.

Hi Nefret and sorry to hear that you do not share our experiences re Boots Pharmacy - it seems that lack of competition is the key here but that really shouldn't be the case. MrsO

You know I mentioned the chemist with poor interpersonal and confidentiality skills? That was a Boots employee. I had the dubious pleasure of meeting her once, too, abolutely obnoxious and SO sure she knew it all. In my experience the worst pharmacies are the ones in supermarkets. The one in S'burys in Durham is truly awful as they never have anything in stock - or if they do there's only half of it so you have to go back. And they take ages to even tell you, usually filling the half prescription without asking if that's OK. They bought out a small chemist close to the GP practice so they could open their in-store one - away from the ex-council estate with old-age bungalows who needed easy access to the pharmacy - and within months Boots opened theirs 100yds away from S'burys on the shopping centre. The supermarket pharmacy is at the far end of the store too - now I wonder why that might be. I steadfastly refused to use them - I didn't want to see the little chemists going the same way as the post offices. Use it or lose it!!!!
