Presistant bppv symptoms

Hi

I am on this forum to discuss my sister. She is feel very helpless and frustrated due to her on going symptoms. She has done and epley maneuver and has seen a slight improvement because she has experienced a reduction in the intensity of the dizziness. Nevertheless, she is however expriencing other persistent disabling symptoms that occur particularly during the night when she rolls over onto her right side which make her nauseous and dizzy. She thinks that these symptoms are permanent after effects of having had bppv. Our GP has put an urgent referal for her to see an ENT specialist to determine for sure that she has BPPV. Unfortuantely, the doctor said that it may be unlikely for her to be seen by a specialist due to the current pandemic. My family and I are extremely concerned about my sister and any advice would be very much appreaciated. She has had these symptoms for almost two months now.

    Hi, there,

It could well be BPPV that you are describing. I have this myself. However, it does not mean that the symptoms will never go away. Nevertheless, the symptoms can indeed be distressing and quite debilitating at times.

Yes, you need a definitive diagnosis for sure - that, is half the battle.

How often is she doing the Epley procedure? I would usually do this 4 times a day.

I am not sure which country you are in but COVID-19 has caused many people to be unable to receive normal Doctor referrals.

Is it at all possible you can seek a private ENT Consultation to speed things up?

FYI I got diagnosed November last year and had 7 weeks of hell. Since then I have only had mild symptoms for one day. So, there is hope.

    Best,

    Graham.

can i ask you a question. did you have vertigo every time you performed the eply manoeuvre and how did you know if it worked? i did it yesterday morning and even though i don't have vertigo when i move my head i still feel light-headed and as if I'm floating. did your symptoms completely disappear after you performed this exercise? i was feeling fine before i did this exercise and fir the time slept on 1 pillow so not sure if that was the reason as before that i never had vertigo when performing this exercise. i still trying to find out what i have. if i had something other than bppv would i have vertigo when doing the eply manoeuvre? im wondering if i have something like meniers disease as i get dizzy all day but my vertigo itself only lasts a few minutes.

      Hello again,

If you get a clear diagnosis you can deal with this much more effectively. However, to answer your question, the Eplay actually made me much worse when I first did it as I was not quite accurate in my technique. My BPPV did not immediately dissipate with the Eplay. With some people it works first time. Even when the Neuro and ENT Doctors performed this, I felt little difference. As I continued to do it several times per day, I gradually felt less fogginess overall. So, it took time and effort. For some it takes time to move the ear crystals back to where they should be.You did not answer about how often you have been doing the Eplay? You can also use some natural self-help measures if diagnosed with BPPV. If it is Meniere's then your ENT should be able to spot this too.

When I have had BPPV it lasted many weeks and not just a few minutes. However, mostly it was an issue trying to lie on my back or side. Walking around was not so problematic most of the time.

      Best,

      Graham.

yeah I've had mine for nearly a week since doing the eply. I'm not too bad walking and fine when driving. i have vertigo during day too but not true vertigo and yes when laying down that's the worst. i now sleep upwards and the morning it takes awhile to adjust. there might be a treatment but even with that it can take weeks to recover. horrible. i don't think ill do the eply again. i dont want weeks of this

Hi Shasta, I had this issue of Vertigo, treated for bppv, didn't help but, it did go away on its own after a few months & I was given Beta-histine for the Vertigo, which was amazing(you cannot take meds around your appt time, they need to diagnose your symptoms & the meds stop it) maybe she can try it, if it will be a while to get to a DR..Vertigo can be from many different causes....In my experience; I found it is best to move very slowly, to give your inner ear/brain time to prepare & stabilize, to prevent the spinning sensation, sleeping... I didn't lay totally flat, being propped up helped & it requires less movement to turn over(keeping your head still, moving the rest of your body as much as possible), having a dim light vs total darkness(you cant tell what's where can start spinning feeling), your eyes can focus on your surroundings and it really helps, also try to focus on things in the distance(at least 10ft away) when moving, it can help too, things close to you are more likely to feel like they are moving too, keep hydrated as dehydration can only make things worse ....Wish I could be more helpful, Good Luck to your sister & BEST WISHES💒🎶🌈🍀☮♾🐾
