Pressure in head and sinus related to anxiety?
Posted , 40 users are following.
I frequently have pressure around my nose, eyes, forehead, temples, and back of head and it worsens when I read or socialize. It affects my cognitive functioning and ability to function in general because the pressure gets worse and my brain feels "foggy" and I cannot visually focus. The lights seem too bright and everything is a little bit blurry. I have felt this way for many years. I do not have a runny nose or cough, but have recently noticed that I feel some post nasal drip. I have also noticed that sometimes I see sparks or stars, but not frequenly. I have talked about this to my doctor many times but he thinks that it is something psychological related such as anxiety or depression. He has referred me to a psychaitrist who said the same thing and prescribed me an anti-depressant called "Trintellix" which apparently improves cognitive functioning alongside treating anxiety and depression.
Furthermore, I have done some blood tests and the only thing that came out of this was that I have am low in iron. I have since increased my iron levels and it is now in the normal range. I feel anxious and sad most of the time because of the affect that this physical feeling has on my functioning. It feels like I cannot function normally. I cannot hold conversations because my brain feels foggy and I cannot concentrate.. I am wondering if anybody experienced this before and is it related to anxiety or something else? Thank you so much.

I have the exact problems and my doctor is telling me its in my head. They told me I need to See a psychiatrist and that its panic attacks. I don't agree as I realise When I use menthol and steam to inhale and exhale the pressure is greatly improved.and it also lossens the phlegm in my throat which makes me start to feel better. I think we have an issue with our sinuses and do need to see an ENT specialist. I also get dizzy and confused which makes me fidgety and gives me short breath.

I have the exact same problem. I am currently on Tintrellix, which I hate because it gives me a lot of anxiety. But as if my problems weren't enough, I believe I have some king of chronic sinus infection. I have a heavy head most of the time acoompanyied by headaches sometimes and also the light bothers me. When the days are bright and humid I can see black dots. It's crazy because it makes the ocd and anxiety even worse.

What you were saying can definitely be related to anxiety. It causes a foggy head and poor concentration. I have had those symptoms plus many more from anxiety and stress. Sometimes I'll be thinking about something and then I just draw a blank . I hate that feeling. Anxiety is a terrible culprit of many symptoms. Try to relax your mind because that will in turn calm your body and mind .

Although not an MD sweetie, it sounds like you may be having migraines. The stars and sparks you see are called "auras" and after them, you will probably get a migraine with 15 minutes. That's usually how long it takes for me as the "auras" continue to close in on my vision for about that time..the gradually subside, leaving me with a fullness in my head including around my nose, eyes, forehead, temples and back of my head.
The "auras" won't allow you to visually focus on anything as they work their way right into your vision. At least that's the way with me. I just had to wait it out and most of the time they last about 15 minutes.
I've been there and have the same thing happen to me. During these times of "auras" and feeling very foggy afterward, I felt extremely anxious. Auras and migraines can happen very often and I can completely understand the way you're feeling.
I have a simply wonderful counselor; along with a fantastic psychotherapist who have both told me that these are migraines. In addition, people who aren't familiar with getting them can get very anxious. You can try deep breathing exercises which some "quack" might tell you to do..but when I did those..the only thing they gave me was the hiccups..lol!!
If you see your MD,they may decide to refer you to a counselor; along with a psychotherapist who will write you a prescription plan for your issues, as most MDs would rather refer you than write those types of prescriptions anymore..simply due to the crap going on in this world with overdoses, etc.
I'm sure there are great counselors and psychotherapists in your area that would be very glad to help. That's what they're there for.
Good luck honey..and God Bless!!

Hi I have the same feelings as your self iv been told it's anxcity but I feel it's not because I feel like this every second of the day I have good days when the head fog is easy to manage. It's gets me down. Trying to function every day is hard work and tiering with work going to the gym ECT or even just going out with family and friends. On my bad days it's extremely hard to deal with anything. This has been like it for 4 years now and no test has found anything I just woke up one morning like it. It kills me because I still feel me inside but this horrible feeling in my head and unsteady on my feet takes over. I feel your pain and suffering you just need keep going and hopefully you will find the problem

I am 79 years old and I have practically the identical problems to you. My problems started about 10 years ago with being filled with fear the whole day long. In the mornings my pyjamas were soaking wet. A physiatrist told me that I had a physical problem and SSRI pills would get rid of it. I think it was that that eventually got rid of the fear. The problem is that that has been followed by all different weird sensations including a terrible pressure behind my nose, headaches, depersonalisation (where everything in the street seems unreal), derealisation, panic attacks etc. One of those who responded to you mentioned getting pins and needles in his hands. Well I have got carpal tunnel in both hands and that involves terrible pain with pins and needles. I think I’m going crazy every morning and (people say that) I’m above average intelligence. I have a feeling that the hands problem is a mixture of carpal tunnel and anxiety. I’m having an operation for the carpal tunnel next week. Two months ago I had a triple bypass operation, so I’m not short of problems. I study Talmud every morning with a friend, and usually whilst I’m studying I’m alright, but as soon as I stop studying all hell breaks loose and everything looks strange. My wife says I have a phobia. I have been to many psychiatrists and at the moment I take duloxetine for the anxiety but it doesn’t seem to help. CBT doesn’t help me. Many knowledgeable people have told me that my salvation will come when I get the right pill. But I must remember that everything is decreed from Above.

I'm super happy I stumbled upon this thread. I have been experiencing alot of what you have. It all started last July when I go this weird pins and needles feeling on my head. I went to urgent care and they wrote it off as vertigo. Now since then, I have been feeling spurts of dizziness but recently have been feeling alot of the head fog, cognitive impairment, pressure on the bridge of my nose, headaches on top of my head and in the front and back, depersonalization, derealisation, and I noticed that when I look at something for to long like a computer screen it begins to kind of warp and twirl.
I thought I was showing signs of MS (multiple sclerosis) so I've been to my Dr numerous times, done blood work, x-rays and even had a MRI on my brain. My Dr put me on propanalol which I guess is supposed to help with anxiety but it did nothing for me (besides lower my heart rate). Aside from that everything is normal according to my Dr so tomorrow I go in to do more blood work to check my thyroid. I honestly just want some answers just like you do and I was wondering if you or anyone on this thread could help.

I know exactly what you’re talking about as I have the VERY same symptoms! It’s so awful. I hate leaving my house because of feeling so weird. I too have had a ton of tests. Saw, eye dr, neurologist, ENT and had tons of tests, scans, MRI, etc. Been told it’s anxiety as well. I constantly feel like I’m being pulled down to the ground. Very strange sensation. But the googly Eye/ Sinus feeling is just awful. Throws my balance off all the time which in turn makes me feel super anxious.

I have the same head pressure problem that gets worse when I read or socialize. At work it gets really bad looking at the computer screen all day and being in a high social setting. I haven't been out with friends or anything in 4 months now because of it. Did you ever find any relief??

Hi,
This exactly describes how I feel, a building pressure in the temple which builds when at work or in social environments. At the end of the working day I feel very odd, head feels like soup and off-balance. MRI scan revealed nothing, meds have been prescribed but seem to have no effect other then making me sweat very easily. I still go out (at weekends it isn't as bad so feel as bad) but during the week - no chance.

How are you doing now I know this post is quite old now, I'm suffering so bad with alot of these symptoms I've had all the tests and so far coming back as anxiety and depression! I've seen a neurologist who thinks maybe migraine! This is non stop 24/7 for 2 years now! I find it hard to believe that it's just anxiety because I always feel like I have cold/flu the pressure and tension in my head, eyes, nose, ears, neck and even teeth make me still believe there's something wrong with my sinuses! I'm almost at a dead end and I'm suffering so bad I don't know what else to do!

My neurologist told me it was probably migraine or headache related too. Mine has been going 6 months now. It's very frustrating! I'm sorry you're going through this also. Did they end up prescribing anything for migraine? Did it help the symptoms at all?

This is what my neurologist said to me too but doesn't feel like any migraine I've ever had before because it's constant!! I feel different because of this, its like a massive weighted blanket over my head and neck with lots of odd sensations going on with nerves and muscles, I really don't feel myself at all! My neurologist gave me topomax which was horrible did nothing and now waiting for botox to see if that would help! I've just started citalopram and propranolol with allergy pills to take! I'm not sure what else to do I just can't accept that this is anxiety

Same here! It doesn't feel like any migraine or headache I've had either. A constant annoying pressure and have the odd sensations also and sometimes feels like my head is vibrating. One doc wanted me to take Prednisone for 6 days but I was too scared to take it. I was prescribed Topomax also but never took it, which now I'm glad I didn't. They want me to do TM S therapy but after reading some reviews I'm scared it'll make me feel worse. On Sertraline right now for about 2 weeks, hoping it'll start working... I hope you're able to find some relief 🙏 If you do, let me know the cure!

Oh god my neurologist gave me propranol beta blocker. Made my light headiness worse. Head rushes. If it is Post viral chronic fatigue syndrome you shouldn't be on any of these. Too much strain on the body. Sounds like your neurologist is guessing like mine was. Do you get like goosebumps on your head?
