prinzmetals angina

Posted , 96 users are following.

I have had prinzmetal's angina for over 7 years. Information about prinzmetal's says that pain occurs at night while in bed. Well not in my case. I get angina pain in the day time as well at night. Does anyone out there get pain in the day as I do ? I get pain at anytime, when it is cold or when I feel stressed and sometimes activity brings it on. I am taking a lot of medication for it , can't be without the nitro spray. Am having a lot of bad days lately hope to have a few good days soon.

Because prinzmetals is rare I feel a bit lonely having it , even though there are people who have the usual angina. It would be good to talk to somebody who prinzmetals.

Yes I have had it for 4 years now all tests were done and this is what it showed up I take Ranexa, imdur, Lisinopril and a small dose of beta blocker because I have an arrhythmia I get it like you at night time daytime mostly at rest it seemed to have gotten less painful I used to be in the ER at least once a month. It drives me crazy from what I've read in forums there is a lot of people with it mostly women although my dad had this for 20 years I seem to be taking Nitro about 4 times a day I just put up with it hoping it will go away someday I just stay close to home don't go anywhere except to the doctors in the store sorry we have to suffer with this but there could be a lot of worse things I hope you have a good family or friends or somebody to help you get through I will talk to you on this thread keep your head up you will be ok I am 69 and I still feel pretty young and good other than this good luck and may God bless you.

Hi I am Cher and have at prinzmetal's  AKA CAS Coronary Artery Spasms for 21 years.  I was under control for many years after diagnosis but went very bad 2010.  A my worse I had angina every 1-1 1/2 hours everyday. I am complicated by Tracheobronchomalacia, Tachy/Brady, Fibromuscular dysplasia and irregual beats. I am in my second 35 visits of Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) which has reversed all my heart failure. Between EECP, thoracis surgery adn meds I am now down to several days inbetween attacks. Yes I cna be alseelp, awake & jsut sitting, if I walk and tach I get angina, if I get low oxygen I get angina, stress can set it off, Col sets it off. Allergy attacks set it off. Caffien, chocolate etc set it off. Beta blockers and migrain mes set it off. I am on Nefedpiine 24 hour 1x day 30 mg, Isosorbibe 120 in am  30 more if having angina during day, Verapimil 180 1 x a day in am, Potassium Magesium, If attack crack liquid gel nephedipine under tongue frollowed by nitro psray every 5 mins followed by second nephedipien. If far from hospital more then 20 min Nitrodinaterate as well. Then go to hospitla if nto stopping by second psray and have letter where they put me on nitro drip when I arrive. Only been in Er 4 tiems sicne mid june so doing so much better then last year where I was at ER or hospitalized much of the last year.

      Hi Cher,

Would love to connect - I was taken into hospital and diagnosed with an MI/NSTEMI and angio suggested it was a result of prinzmental angina... I'm confused, scared and a bit clueless really. I'm a 34m with no history of sever Chest pain... it's been 4 weeks and I can barely walk (at least the panic attacks are gone - nerve experienced anything like it!) and not sure if it's normal recovery or the meds (clopdigrel 75mg and diltizem 90 in the morning and 90 in the evening - chest pain have worsened since I got home than the days following the event) the couple of days in the hospital! sad

My concerns are whether it's the medication or my condition somehow worsening!

Well  just went from having a fairly calm time with days inbetween with o Angina. Then for days around 4 am I woke with angiina. Three days it took 1 capsule nephedipine 10mg crakacj under tongue , 3 biro spray 5 min apart then another nephedipine to get it stoppd. On the forth day unfortunely did not get it stopped and it took 2 hour 24 minutes for them to get my IV started with Nitro drip and that was too long I had a NSTEMI conrimed in cath lab. Yesterda they had to tak eme bake in for Nitro drip and I am understanding order if the attack keep persisting even with long intervals betweeen and I canot terminitate the pain which for me shoot sup to 19 pretty much immediate, I must go to ER and be placed right on the Nitro Drip. My Primary Cardio is over an hour away so I know have one with in 10 minutes of my home as well that wil be my emergency Cardio go to.

I have found this very interesting as when I explained my symptoms to the GP and nurse practioner  I explained that I had these pains at night while lying in bed as well as when I started to walk.

No-one has mentioned prinzmetals angina to me and to be honest these symptoms have now gone at night although the walking pain is still there.

I may mention this when I have my next meeting with the cardiac surgeon.

Hi I too have prinzmetal angina and can angina pain anytime in bed, sitting watching TV, doing housework etc. Its also called variant angina and can be confused with unstable angina. I was diagnosed when I was 55 and am now 60 and I am female. I find my medication keeps a lot of pain at bay.

Hope you have found this useful.

PM Angina, variant angina or unstable angina are usually all in the same basket especially if you have blockages in arteries

Oopps .... sorry I hadn't finished explaining and I some how posted ...... P M Angina ,variant and unstable are usually as I said put in the same basket because blood flow and oxygen is restricted to the heart due to either spasms or plaque build up in known coronary heart disease, spasming as you know  opens and closes rapidly restricting blood flow and because it can happen at rest this is why they call prinzmetal angina ..... unstable angina , medication does help at times but generally they don't work on prinzmetal angina, especially people that are suffering this condition on a regular basis, our bodies become immune to the medication, this is why doctors keep bumping up medications to try and keep it at bay only to find spasming returns .

That should of been Prinzmetal angina. variant angina and unstable angina are pretty well much the same thing. I have noticed a lot lately that doctors call prinzmetal angina CAS or ACS. CAS - obviously coronary artery spasms, ACS -  Acute coronary syndrome
