Hi all,

In view of the long wait for hip replacement with the NHS (50 weeks north wales) should I consider paying for private medical care and get it over with???

      Hi Lillie,

I too have AVN. Do you know what caused yours? So far as I know it has only affected my chips and shoulder joints. You mentioned your feet?

    Hi Paula

I was in pain for a very long time beforehand and got to the point I was unable to do anything and felt I couldn't go on that way any longer as it impacted on quality of life for me and my husband.

We took the decision to go private to give control of when it could take place and how quickly without any cancellation risks.

I had a lot of damage to both hips which had collapsed and fused in the hip joint and I had no movement at all and was in constant pain.  The damaged was all due to RA.

I had to have both hips done at the same time as did not have a good hip to recover on. Scarey!

Had my op within 3 weeks of seeing consultant and can't fault consultant, treatment, aftercare,  physio and hydrotherapy (a bonus if you can get this) to build mobility and muscle.

The impact on our lives has been life changing and improved both our quality of lives.

If you have any private insurance I would definately recommend you go this route.  If not, I know it's a lot to pay (and we struggled with the same decision as had some insurance but would not cover all the cost) but can only pass on our feeling that it was money well spent as it has opened up a whole new life which is improving daily.

Hope this gives you some clarity.
