Probable kidney stone(s)?

I was diagnosed by the out of hours emergency doc. with a "raging" kidney infection over 2 weeks ago. Having completed antibiotic treatment, I'm still having terrible back pain, plus pain in my arms, shoulders neck and head. My GP has arranged an abdominal ultrasound to check for kidney stones, but not given me any pain relief apart from 500mg paracetamol & advised me to dring a lot of water. The pain is dreadful & paracetamol isn't helping. I have Naproxen, since I have compressed spinal nerves, so I'm taking those, and they help a bit but the pain is nevertheless still severe. Can anyone suggest what else might help.?I am struggling very much.

hello Elizabeth, I am so sorry to hear about your pain. When I had stuck kidney stones; the pain was all in my abdomen. It began with a mild tummy ache which quickly escalated to out of this world pain. I was on holiday in Greece at the time; and had to get a taxi to the nearest private hospital. As soon as I arrived a brilliant Doctor knew exactly what was wrong with me; (despite the language barrier!) even though I had no idea at the time myself. He gave me an injection of something absolutely life saving for me at the time; but sadly i couldn't find out what it was. If anyone could tell me I would love to know! I think I was extremely lucky to be abroad then because I'm pretty damn sure they wouldn't have had that in the UK! As I've had several more stones stuck since then. Anyway I am so sorry about your pain, the best medicine I received here was Diclofenac Sodium suppositories or Voltarol as they are called. These helped tremendously. If you do get a stones diagnosis then I highly recommend to ask for those!!!

All the best and good luck

One of the symptoms of kidney stones is if you have blood in your urine so watch out for that.

Oramorph is good but Dr may not prescribe it for you.

Diclofenac is also good but works best when given as a suppository.

Good luck with all of this.

Take care and keep in touch

The GP saw minute traces of blood -Haematuria- in my urine which is why he has ordered an ultrasound- unfortunately, it isn't scheduled until Wed. week, which seems like forever when I'm in pain and worried! Do kidney stones usually cause visible blood (ie something that can be seen with naked eye) in urine?

Is kidney stone pain constant, or intermittent, and can it be felt in other parts of the body- eg upper back, due to inflammation or muscle tension.

So sorry that your are having all this pain Elizabeth.

In my experience (and ive had over 40 stones,3 surgeries)the pain was intermittent, could last for hours/days or sometimes just a short while.Pain would usually be in both kidney areas radiating down to the groins, sometimes a sore tummy.I never had pain in upper back/arms/neck etc,but we are all different.

You do not always see the blood in your urine but can still be there when they dip test it.

Regarding pain relief i totally agree with Angela voltarol suppositories are excellent, the hospital even gave me buscopan which seemed to help when taken with voltarol and paracetamol as each work in different ways.

Hopefully youll get some relief soon.

    Good luck with it all.
