Problem with 2nd TKR

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi, had my 1st TKR 18mths ago and 2nd 6mths ago. Worked really well after the 1st and all was good,  did a lot of PT before the 2nd and it is so much easier than the 1st . BUT now I'm having big problems with my 1st TKR, it won't straighten and feels like when walking it buckles every now and again. My calf muscle feels so tight when doing my work outs, I go to PT 3times a week but don't feel as I'm getting anywhere, feeling so fed up as my 2nd TKR went so well , any help would be really appreciated.

    Hi Sue

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems. I’m in the exact same position as you but about 4 months behind! Like you I do exercise 3 times a week (I’m just getting back to it this week, 8 weeks post op 2nd TKR) and  I have problems with tight muscles around the knee, thigh, calf and the top of my foot. I go to a physiotherapist once a week and she gives the muscles some pretty tough massage and loosens everything off and I feel so much lighter afterwards. It may be worth a try.

Thanks Lesley , I go to physio 3 times a week , today she gave a very tough massage and ultra sound and it does feel a bit better. Just annoyed as it was fine but in the last few weeks seem to be going backwards. I know it will improve and just have to be patient. Hope you keep getting better .

Hi Sue, if your 1st TKR leg isn't straightening fully it could go some way to explain why the knee is buckling sometimes. You need full extension in order to walk properly & not limp. So maybe some advice from your physio on what could help that. That would be my 1st concern.

If you think about it at 12 months your 1st leg was probably not back up to full recovery from that TKR, it can take up to 2 years for full recovery.

Maybe ice & elevate BOTH knees it could be the extra work your 1st knee has had to do, after the 2nd op, has put a little too much strain on it.

One of our local Osteopaths also has an excellent sports injury masseuse, maybe try something like that to ease the muscles in that leg. A really good massage can be sheer bliss. They don't pussyfoot around there may be some discomfort but afterward it's wonderful when the muscles have loosened off.

I agree that one op is totally different to the other. I had my 1st TKR October 2016 & the left TKR December 2017. The 2nd has been much easier to move but more painful. I managed to flex the knee to 89 in hospital the day after the op, only got to 89 on the 1st after 4or5 weeks! No 2 recoveries are the same! This one was my weakest knee & I thought would be the worst! Who can tell?? But then I have a long, long way to go at 4 weeks po!!

I hope you resolve all your issues quickly, the last thing you need at this stage is this.

Let us know how it's going.
