I take hydroxchloroquine for lupus it was initially prescribed by a consultant who wrote to my gp regarding my condition and saying what meds were prescribed from then on I was able to get repeat prescriptions from my gp. I have done this for over 10 years.

Thank you Christine for taking the trouble to reply to me it just seems weird that some Gp's will prescribe it and some either can't or won't it just seems my GP and consultant are contradicting each other and I really don't want to have to go to the hospital to pick up a prescription if I shouldn't have to, anyway its nice to know that you don't have this problem, Kath

A GP can't prescribe certain drugs off their own bat - but can once a specialist has approved it. I'd lay odds your GP is trying to get out of a specialist drug being charged to his budget. All comes down to money.

All I can suggest is trying a different GP in the practice to see if another will be more helpful. Then ask the practice manager. Then go to the CCG (Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) were created following the Health and Social Care Act in 2012, and replaced Primary Care Trusts on 1 April 2013. They are clinically-led statutory NHS bodies responsible for the planning and commissioning of health care services for their local area.). Beyond that not sure what to do. It is a common problem.

Thank you Eileen for taking the trouble to reply to my question and I must say that gosh youre very knowledgeable on this subject I wish I was that clever ! My consultant says they are not expensive so musnt be that, GP was going on about rules and regulations on prescribing certain drugs, they have both written to each other and both think they are correct. I'm sure my consultant knows what she's talking about so will try what you suggest and see a different GP and see what happens then, thanks kath

If I were you Kath I would ask your consultant to write to your gp asking them to prescribe your medication in fact your consultant should have already written to your gp, as far as I am aware Hydrochloroquine is a drug usually prescribed by a specialist and not a gp as its not a run of the mill medication. I have been on it for many many years and see my consultant once a year who then writes to my consultant confirming that I still need to take it.  I can say that it is an expensive drug so it may be your gp is thinking of their budget since ive been on it my brand has been changed 3 times to a cheaper version.  Good luck let me know how you get on.
