Problems pasing urine and stool last tear after total hip replacement - advice re next one next week

In 2020 I had a total right sided hip replacement. During the operation and for 36 or so hours afterwards I had a catheter inserted. When it was removed I had great difficulty for several days in passing urine. Similarly I was horrendously constipated for several days post surgery needing a lot of laxatives. I am due to have total left sided hip replacement at the end of next week . Has anyone got any top tips about how I can avoid a repeat of last years problems

Did the explain why you had a catheter in for so long? My hubby has problems passing water after he has had a catheter in.

After my hip op, as soon as they woke my up from the sedation, a nurse said they wanted to empty my bladder, I said no but she said they had to, and measure how much water there was. Luckily I was able to pass it myself later otherwise they would have catheterized.

Painkillers will always constipate you, and for some, cause sickness. They gave me painkillers even though I did not have any pain after op, it was my very first time in a hospital, now I know better, and would not take them. Drink plenty of water after your op, it might help.

My right hip is now on getting really bad, I will not have that done though, once was enough.

Good luck on you next op.
