Problems with daytime urination

I had an hip replacement 7 weeks ago. Before this I was diagnosed with Vaginal Atrophy so lots of Vaginal Soreness, Bladder soreness and problems with urination etc.

Anyway I came out of hospital on May 1st. Still felt like I wanted to wee all the time, even though I'd just been, but rarely managed anything more than a trickle.

In the early hours of May 2nd, I had a really powerful urge to go to to bathroom but I fell in my panic getting out of bed and in struggling to get up with my new hip, I ended up wetting the floor. No way was I going to get to the bathroom on time. I was shocked and totally panicked.

Since the above mentioned incident, I have lost my urge to wee although I still go to the bathroom at regular times of course. Trouble is, during the day, my urination output is minimal. So I end up retaining, till the early hours when normal services resume. I can get out of bed easily now so I usually get up twice after midnight and my output is usually 300ml or more!

The doctor knows about this and suggested I drink more in an effort to bring back normal day time urination. So instead of drinking 1250ml a day, which she said wasn't enough, I now drink 2 litres a day. For the first few days my urination came back to normal during the day. I was so relieved.

But now, a few days later, I'm back to square 1. Drank a litre today between 8.30am and 12.30pm. went to bathroom soon after 12.30 and only managed 75ml. Plus it was dark coloured meaning I'm dehydrated. But how could I be dehydrated after drinking a litre of fluid?

Perhaps I've got it all wrong and don't understand how things work, but having drank a litre of fluid I would have expected an output of at least 300ml and for it to be the right colour too. Yes I know some of it goes into our system but surely not most of a litre. This is scaring me now. Not only that but I don't want to think I am retaining a lot of fluid either.

Thanks for listening.

I also have major problems emptying my bladder. I drink plenty and only get 200 - 300 ml out. I don't get the urge to go. Hospital doctor told me to catheterise 3 times a day and using catheter get a further 800ml out. On one occasion I got out a total of 1100, yes 1100 ml.

I had no idea the bladder could hold so much.

Must admit I discovered the same with barely managing to wee at all during the day, then emptying my bladder between 12. midnight and 8pm as usual. I discovered I was holding on to a litre plus during the day and I had no idea I could hold that much either. Was quite shocked. It's a nightmare isn't it.

My situation is slightly different to yours as I had bladder cancer (early stage) removed 3 years ago.

I may also have an enlarged prostate which I don't think you would have.

I'm lucky in as much as I don't get any urge to we, just catheterisr 3 or more times a day.

Really sorry to hear that David. I think my problem is more of a psychological one of I'm honest, though how to fix it, I don't know. Seeing the Bladder/continence team in a few weeks so I can at least speak to them about it.

Mabe it's a good time to see a specialist. I have bladder retention and sounds similar to what you describe. The dr prescribed a unitary muscle relaxer and made all the difference.

Some time it could be a UTI.

hope you get to the bottom of this soon. I know how uncomfortable it can be. Totally miserable actually.

Thanks for your reply. Glad the muscle relaxer helped you. Got to see Bladder and Continence first before Doc will send me to specialist. Not a UTI. No pain or soreness on urination. Yes it can be totally miserable can't it.

I hope you get in to a urologist soon. I can't imagine waiting too long.

I hope it is only a simple fix with medication. Will keep positive thoughts !
