Prochlorperazine for emergency use?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I’m currently taking 16mg of Betahistine 3 times a day. When I saw my consultant last week he suggested that I have Prochlorperazine [Buccastem] to take if I have a vertigo attack especially when out. Have others found this effective? There seem to be a number of potential strong side effects – are they common?

    Hi,

I have heard that you can take this to aid with nausea but my Dr told me today not to use both together so now I am confused also.

Prochlorperazine [Buccastem] is an antipsychotic drug which does combat vertigo and nausea quite well but it is also a powerful sedative so is likely to make you drowsy. I use it, thankfully rarely, and it usually has the desired effect. It does not have any effect on Meniere's so persevere with the Betahistine which takes at least 4 weeks to work. If you still get attacks a higher dose should be requested - I am currently on 64mg tds and staying well.

It is OK to take Buccastem to combat an attack whilst on betahistine as the two drugs do not interact.

Thanks for that. My consultant has told me that I should feel free to double the dosage to 32mg 3 times a day at times when the maintenance dose is not enough. I'll have to see how I mange with the Buccastem if I get an attack while out some place.

I found bad side effects. Then I found I shouldn't have been prescribed them as there is a history of blood clots in my family.

Thanks for the feedback Lizzie. The side effects look to be potentially serious but my family has no history of blood clots so hopefully a very limited use of the Buccastem won't trigger anything like that.
