prococious puberty

i believe that my daughter who is 9 yrs old has this condition and has been living with it since she was 4 of 5 yrs old.It started with mood swings which i just put down to a bad temper, how wrong was i when the breasts and pubic hair then started to appear.Until 12 1 08 i just thought my daughter was one of the unlucky few that had just started to develop early, but i saw a programme about prococious puberty and realised that my she has more than likely have this condition. Now my worries are for her childhood being no longer as child like as it is for her friends.I am also worried it may give children reason to bully her as it is so perfectly obvious that she is physically and mentally different to others.Unfortunetly we don't know of any one else with this condition so have nobody that understands,my daughter doesn't seem concerned about the changes tha are happening to her so i'm trying to be the same but it's difficult. She is far to young to be going through this.If there is any one that knows what it's like either as parent or was a youngster with the same please get in touch via this space. thanks.

Hi, I can relate to this. My daughter started putting a little weight on at approx 6 yrs old. By this age she had full pubic hair, by 7 years old she developed under arm hair and odour. We talked to her about showering daily and using anti-persperant but at 7 years old it seems so unfair. Our daughter is now 9 and now has slightly spotty/oily skin and is quite tall and looks older for her age......wearing clothes to fit a 13 yrs ol. We took er to the Dr's who then referred her to a hopsital but after a very brief talk - the specialist just told us that our daughter would probably suffer with polysistic ovary syndrome. That was that.....no offer of a blood test, no more answers and so we left. But after watching the programme about prococous / early puberty - this programme told us more than the specialist and now im seriously contemplating getting more answers from a different doctor. It is such a shame our children have to go through this and it is heartbreaking that we cannot stop it. Is a help to know it's not just my daughter suffering.

i was 8.5 years old when i started my periods.i thought i had hurt myself down there and ran to my mum so she could put a plaster on me and i would be better.my mother was absolutly shocked and i was scared because i didnt know what it was that had made my mum so scared and shocked. anyways bad news was that those few years until i reached secondary year in secondary school were hell. i couldnt tell anyone about it i was an alian. i wish my mum could have stopped my periods for atleast a year or 2. and yes it is traumatic.almost 20 years later i am seing signs in my nine year old daughter of early puberty and i am scared and here i am looking for a solution. i have never spoken about my experience to anyone it seems like an eternal secret between my mum and i. i always lied to everyone that i started my period when i was 13 years old.so yes it is hell the first few years and it does scar you with bad memories and i think it also affects your height as you do grow once you start your periods but not as much asu should.and you can have children and normal life but you always have a fear, what age will they start???????

My granddaughter is 8 and is starting to grow pubic and underarm hair, as well as underarm sweating. I started my periods at 10 1/2, and was not at all developed, no breasts or hair at the time, and it was quite scary. I think it's something to do with all the hormones that are fed to beef cattle, there's got to be a payback somewhere.

Many children start puberty around the age 8/9 trust me. I work with children of this age and by the time they have reached 10/11 quite a few have started their periods.

It is not uncommon for a parent to send a letter in to me stating their daughter has started her period and will it be okay for them to leave class during lessons if need be.

Not as rare as people might think.

Hi to all you parents whose daughters are suffering from early puberty. My daughter is 8 now but when she was 6 she was diagnosed with precocious puberty. She had breast development, pubic hair and body odour. She under went a series of test b4 being diagnosed. Now has to have hormone injections every 8 weeks.

My Daughter is nearly 10, she started to show signs of pubic hair about a year ago we took her to the doctors she was not too concerned as she was nearly 9 and aalthough she was on the lower end of starting was ok. We had to go back every two months for checkups on the last visit the doctor filled in the sheet which had she is in stage 3 of breast development and stage 5 of pubic hair the doctor was happy with her development and unless there were any concerns we did not have to go back.

I agree with Melbi, I am a PE teacher for girls aged Nine to Eleven and all these girls are wearing bras or bra type tops. You also notice with the ten and eleven yr olds having dark patches of Pubic Hair already.

Hi, about a year ago I thought my daughter had started puberty however the signs were not very obvious. She is now six with fully developed public hair, she sweats all the time and her mood swings are horrific! I am absolutely mortified! I have contacted the doctor and am currently waiting for a call back. I have heard all sorts of stories should I be so concerned? And does any one have any advise on how I should speak to her about this?

I started my periods aged 10, I was always a great deal taller than my classmates, about 5ft 5 then & needed a bra too. I was the only one, nobody was concerned or worried about it. It never affected me, I just accepted that I matured Early. Some girls do some not until 18! It never caused me problems. Had a normal menstrual cycle. Followed by 3 children, both daughters started at 11. Stopped growing by 12, 5ft 7. Menopause at 55. All good.
