Proctalgia Fugax - my way of stopping it

Hi. I have been meaning to talk on the internet about my battle with Proctalgia Fugax for a long time now, I feel it is my duty to tell others how I now completely manage my pain.

Ive had this affliction for 10 or so years. At the start I would nearly pass out with the pain - always in the night, and crippling for at least an hour.

Somehow I stumbled on how I stop it occurring, but more importantly, if I do get it, how to limit it to just 3/4 of an hour of mild discomfort.

****Stop it from happening.

  1. Don't push the small room.

Easier said than done, but stress and haste make me sometimes push when I'm having a poo. I have to be mindful when ever I'm visiting the toilet. Relax, let it happen, and don't be afraid to walk out if things aren't happening as planned. Be patient.... be mindful.

  1. Get in and get out.

And the next important thing - Only be there for the shortest amount of time possible. So don't read, and don't treat the toilet like it's an escape capsule.

Stop the pain once you have it.

  1. Breathe, Like I mean BREATHE

Those who have given birth know what I'm talking about or should. I know when I'm about to get Proctalgia Fugax and I set myself up, in a room by myself, and take the biggest deepest breathes my lungs can handle, and my brain.

I'm talking a big gulp - a huge huge lung full of air, and then go a smidge more. Really deep and rhythmic, and don't be afraid of making a racket. It's harder to do deep breathing, harder than you think when you are fighting pain. You have to be your own nurse telling you to keep at it.

  1. Lying down with my knees up.

Ive tried having my legs propped on a couch too, that is good too. But somehow having your knees up on the ground makes things better.

When I do suffer this awful affliction, if I do the breathing, the pain never gets above slightly annoying and as long as I keep breathing (don't let it fool you, it will come back if you stop) for about 35 to 40 mins - it goes. And I am spared one of the most painful things you can go through as a human, in my opinion.

Try it if you want to - its my saviour. Good Luck Pete.
